No New Mideast Policy
President Reagan asserted
that the Iran-Contra affair
has not deflected his at-
tention from the constant
peace-threatening problems
besetting the Mideast. He
was asked if he is considering
a new policy in the region, in
view of the Iran situation and
its impact on the Arab
countries.
"Well, I wouldn't say it is
anything new, except that
we've made sure Arab leaders
understand what we were try-
ing to accomplish in terms of
working for better U.S:
Iranian relations," he said.
"Obviously, the Arabs sup-
port Iraq, not Iran. I think we
still have good relations with
those Arab leaders in Jordan,
Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Moroc-
co and the Gulf states, who
have long been our friends.
They know we've been doing
our best to promote peace
between Iran and Iraq. Now,
the fact is that Iraq has been
ready for a ceasefire, but Iran
refuses a cease-fire . . . unless
the Iraqi president steps
down."
As for any new initiatives
at this time, Reagan said that
the U.S. is always working for
peace in the Mideast and will
continue those efforts. "We
want solid relations with the
Arab states as well as with
Israel," he said. "I know the
Iran problem and its disclos-
ures have troubled some Arab
leaders. But we have private-
ly conveyed our position to
them and I think they under-
stand our motives. For exam-
ple, they now realize that we
weren't coming in as an ally
of Iran. So I believe we have
eased the situation con-
siderably."
The President said he still
stands by his 1982 peace in-
itiative, which includes a call
for a Palestinian entity in
association with Jordan. "I
see no reason to change it," he
said. "Some Arab leaders
welcomed it. And that's the
initiative the U.S. hopes to
pursue?'
Critical of Carter
Concerning Jimmy Carter's
trip to the Mideast, Reagan
reacted sharply to the former
president's "unwarranted"
criticisms of the Administra-
tion's policies in that region.
Reagan was particularly con-
cerned about Carter's claim
that he (Reagan) favors mili-
