calories in a half cup of

"Our
parents
and
grandparents would never
have thought of taking a
shopping list, such as Katahn
suggests, to the grocery store.
How many of that generation
ever heard the word choles-
terol? As Mollie Goldberg
said, 'About calories we
wouldn't talk. About taste,
yes, but calories, no.'
"Neighborhood shopping
was more satisfying than the
big supermarkets of today.
Writer Frita Drapkin's
mother said, 'You serving
yourself? Why should I? I
pay, let them serve me. Ev-
erything has a big price tag
on it. Take it or leave it. Who
you got to complain to if it
costs too much or if you take
home the box mit stronber-
ries and half the bottom is
farshimult? You gonna com-
plain to the manager? The
boss is in Florida, maybe.
What does he care if I got to
watch the pennies?
"Any shnook mit Belt can
just walk around pushing a
basket on wheels and take
what he sees,' Frita's mama
pointed out. But in the old
neighborhood, if you could go
in with . 25 cents and come
out with a dollar's worth of
groceries — that was shop-
ping.
"Comedian Alan King's
favorite childhood memory is
of the neighborhood grocery
store he frequented as a
young boy on the Lower East
Side of New York. During the
Depression, the store owner
dispensed advice along with
credit and unflagging good
humor with the vegetables.
The smell of garlic mixed
with the smell of salami and
cheese. .To the retailer with
the personal touch, customers
told their problems, their
hopes, their dreams and their
secrets.
"Today, "said King," mar-
kets are blindingly lighted,
freezing cold and electroni-
cally opened and closed. The
odors of food have been
sealed and boxed. We gaze at
mile-high displays, select
meat through cellophane
packages and stock up on
one-minute meals.
"Markets have a sign out
front which reads Ample
Parking, " King says. He fig-
ured out that Irving Ample is
the manager and he's the
only one who can get into the
lot. Once inside, he also fig-
ured out that they take 40
baskets at,at time, put them
in a vise,, jam them together
and spot-weld them because
if you can-pull a basket loose,
you get a prize. --
"Driving a gupermarket
basket is almost as dangerous
as being in the Indianapolis
500," says King. "Women
drivers cut you off at every
