fried chicken can have as much
as three times as many calories
as the same amount of broiled
chicken, it becomes easier to
order the latter and enjoy it
more.
These types of food choices
must be fashioned into a per-
manent lifestyle change. Try-
ing to change your eating style
or habits (snacker, binger etc.)
has proven not to be very effec-
tive in the maintenance of
weight. We need to identify our
strengths/weaknesses and
build success around them. It is
okay to snack, nibble, etc. but
learn to substitute popcorn in-
stead of peanuts, turkey sand-
wiches instead of corned beef.
We can learn to undereat at the
beginning of the week to bal-
ance off weekend overeating. If
you want the pizza Saturday
night — that's okay — simply
cut back somewhere else.
Finally, the importance of
increasing your physical ac-
tivity can mean the difference
between success and failure in
dieting and long-term weight
control.
Each week in this col-
umn, The Jewish News will
print a locally-produced
feature for singles dealing
with food, fitness, finance
or health. Next week's fea-
ture deals with health.
