It is estimated that 40 per-
cent of Americans are 40
pounds or more overweight.
Obesity has reached epidemic
proportions in this country.
Many overweight people be-
come targets of criticism, dis-
crimination and social ostraci-
zation. For the overweight per-
son who is single and searching
for dates, companionship or
marriage, a weight problem
can be a devastating obstacle.
Yet, after many years of scien-
tific research and a multitude
of treatment programs, fad
diets and self-help books,
weight control remains a
perplexing and frustrating
problem.
However complex the prob-
lem, for most people, the solu-
tion can be relatively simple
(not to be confused with easy).
With a basic understanding of
calories a person can easily
learn to balance their caloric
intake and maintain their de-
sired weight.
Our American diet has
changed considerably since the
1900s. With the preponderance
of junk foods, prepared foods
and an increase of fatty meats,
we have increased our con-
sumption of fats 35 percent.
Since fats have nine calories
per gram and carbohydrates
and protein have four calories
per gram, a diet richer in fats is
the major culprit in our
downfall. Corresponding with
a diet higher in fats is a consid-
erable decline in the amount of
physical activity in this coun-
try. Due to modern con-
veniences such as the auto-
mobile, washer, dryer and
other appliances, the physical
activity for the typical Ameri-
can has declined 75 percent
since the days of our great-
grandparents.
For example: a 125 pound
woman in 1900 needed an es-
timated 2,100 calories per day
to maintain her body weight.
Today her 125 pound great-
granddaughter needs only
1,400 calories per day to main-
tain her weight. Anything over
and above 1,400 calories will
certainly lead to weight gain.
Consequently, a person's
weight depends on the balance
or imbalance between calories
consumed and calories ex-

pended in physical activity. So
it's back to the basics of simple
arithmetic. If you intake more
than you output, you have a
weight gain.
For people who want this
new year to be the year he or
she really puts a stop to the
weight loss/weight gain
roller-coaster, there are three
crucial steps: First, learn the
calorie content of different
foods, especially high fat foods.
Second, make enough changes
in your habitual food choices to
lower your overall caloric in-
take. Third, increase your level
of physical activity.
It is interesting to note that
most people are not knowl-
edgeable about nutrition and
calories. For example, many
people equate volume with
calories. But is is not necessar-
ily the amount of food but
rather the fat content and
calories within the foods that is
important. Here are a few sur-
prising examples: a 12 oz.
steak with black coffee has
more calories than a similar
portion of broiled fish, a baked
potato with sour cream, two
servings of vegetables, a large
dinner salad with low calorie
dressing, a buttered roll, and
small scoop of ice cream and
two cups of coffee with cream
and sugar!
Similarly, the typical "diet
plate" served in many restau-
rants consisting of a ham-
burger patty, cottage cheese
and a peach half, has Ph times
as many calories as a large
• turkey sandwich with lettuce,
tomato, mustard and a side
order of tole slaw. Still not con-
vinced? Do you realize that:
A plain donut has more
calories than a jelly-filled
donut with powdered sugar on
top?
Four handfuls of nuts (about
an 8 oz. cup) has 900 calories?
A tablespoon of hot fudge has
less calories than a tablespoon
of thousand island dressing?
You are better off putting hot
fudge on your salad!
Most people are startled by
these facts but is is essentially
this type of knowledge that
will help a person successfully
battle their bulge.
Long term success in weight
reduction means that dieters
must learn which foods are
high in fats, which are low in
fats and then choose accord-
ingly. When you learn that
