designers even to mention
pants suits this season, Given-
chy showed them for evening,
with tailored jackets and made
in white cotton with metallic
thread intertwined.
Jean-Paul Gaultier and
Patrick Kelly — Both
designers are considered
among the most avant garde
and this season, both showed
body-baring clothes made of
stretchy swimsuit fabric.
Gaultier focused on long
Edwardian-looking double-
breasted jackets with puffed
sleeves, paired with full skirts.
He also teamed cropped polo
shirts with button-down collars
and high-waisted skirts and
pants. Earthy colors
predominated, such as copper,
ochre, umber and eggplant,
along with grey and dusty
pastels. Gloves stretched over
the elbows provided a feminine
touch.
Karl Lagerfeld — Designing
for his own collection and for
the House of Chanel, the
emphasis was on high-waisted
skirts and pants, often teamed
with bolero jackets. Suits had
unconstructed jackets and full
pleated skirts. Some of the
suits, as well as day dresses,
had peplums or rows of ruffles
at the back. For accents: straw
boaters and berets; striped
leather boots and very high
heeled pumps; small quilted
handbags.
For evening, black leather
was combined with net, as in a
short leather dress with one
ruffled net sleeve and a long
ruffled net panel. A black
leather jacket was trimmed in
lace; the matching leather
halter dress had lace ruffles.
Claude Montana — The
designer departed from his
usual hard-edged clothes to
produce floral chiffon blouses
and body-baring pastel
dresses. He also showed matte
jersey palazzo pants and, for
evening, a short strapless
dress with black leather bodice
