udith Cantor admits she
has a logical mind.
Where others see the
myriad little tasks of
wedding planning — the
lists of appointments, the
scraps of paper with price
estimates, the airline
schedules, the RSVPs, the
incoming gifts — Judy
Cantor sees SYSTEMS.
"Everyone is so
concerned with time
management these days,
why not think of social
management and social
organization?" she asks. It's
a logical question, and six
years ago, when she started
posing that question, there
were no answers in the
marketplace. But she could
see that a major social event
such as a wedding could be
consolidated into one filing
system so all of the tasks
and details would not have
to be scattered
helter-skelter for the bride
and her mother to keep
track of.
Cantor had no track
record as a business lady or
as a publisher. She had
been teaching English as a
second language in the
Bloomfield Hills School
system when creativity
struck. "My husband of 35
years is a patent attorney,
and I guess I got
encouragement to launch
this project from his
example," she says.
The Coordinator that she
developed is a refinement of
the old-fashioned loose-leaf
notebook, with files and
pockets to hold all the
scraps of vital information
according to subject matter.
Headings such as
Invitations, RSVP's, Foto
Facts, Letters and Gift
Cards, Bills and Business,
Table Charts, are all given
their own special section,
with enough space to
accommodate parties of up
to 800 people. Refills are
also available.
Cantor feels that
Michigan is a wonderful
area to develop a new idea.
When she designed her
prototype Coordinator, she
prevailed upon a young
artist at the School of
Creative Studies to help her
with the layout. Financial
help came in the form of a
loan from SCORE, (senior
core of retired executives)
part of the State
Department of Commerce
Small Business
Administration.
More help has come from
Michigan Channels. For
the second year, Paula
Blanchard has featured the
Coordinator in the state's
catalogue of Made in
Michigan products.
Marketing tips came
from several Birmingham
stationery shopowners who
encouraged her even
further and recommended
her to the National
Stationery Show, the major
outlet for the paper goods
industry. Held in New York
City every May, Judy rents
a booth, brings plenty of
copies of the Coordinator to

display, published in both
hard and soft cover editions,
and takes orders.
"There are 200 stores
throughout the country
that now carry the
publication, even a bridal
shop in Anchorage," she
says proudly. "I could have
sold the idea to a publisher,
watched it get a splash for a
year or two, and then get
`remaindered' in the
stationery shops. I choose
the opposite route. With me
doing the sales and
marketing myself, I think I
can make the item a
standard reference."
- There have been some
enjoyable bonuses. Judy
gives workshops around the
country on the subject of
wedding preparation
though she is careful to
avoid giving advice and
refers people to ettiquette
maven "Miss Manners" for
ticklish questions.
And there is fan mail to
keep up with along with the
day-to-day business. "I
have women executives
who have written to tell me
that the book was as
valuable as a secretary
when they have prepared
weddings. It's fun to be
involved in other people's
simchas this way," she says
smiling.
The Coordinator can be
found in several local stores
including Lee's Specialty,
Signatures and Barbara's
Paper Bag.
