"Take a vacation to the
Soviet Union and get to-
gether with some refuseniks
and try to understand their
situation. Tell people why
you're there.
"Once -.i.n—a•whil.e,_..make a
phone call ... You know the
phone is- monitored and it
will send a message to the
Soviets. And write."
"Stand up on this issue,"
Simon told his listeners.
"Let's not repeat history.
Let's' stand up for people who
desperately need that hope."
It is easy to live in the com-
fort of the United States and
"not hear that call for help
from Soviet Jewry," he said.
Answering a question from
the audience, Simon said that
he felt that a boycott of visit-
ing Soviet performers accom-
plishes very little. "I do favor
leafletting to let people
know."
But the most moving mo-
ment in the senator's low-key
talk came as he _answered
another audience question:
Why does he support Israel so
strongly?
It is more than because Is-
rael is a democracy and a
U.S. ally, he said. He sup-
ports Israel for moral rea-
sons.
"We have a mezuzah on
the door of our house in Il-
linois. We have another
mezuzah on the door of our
apartment in Washington,
D.C. We're probably more Or-
thodox than many of you," he
quipped.
He continued more seri-
ously: "I'm Lutheran. My
wife is Catholic. It so hap-
pens that a half-Lutheran,
half-Catholic country perpet-
rated a horrible, horrible
deed on the Jewish people
specifically and on the world
in general."
To read about what was
said about the Jews during
Martin Luther's Reformation,
he added, would convince
anyone of the need for a
State of Israel.
"I do not consider my stand
an anti-Arab stand," he ex-
plained. "I don't oppose arms
sales to Saudi Arabia and
Jordan because I'm anti-
Saudi or anti-Jordanian, but
because I'm unwilling to send
arms to a country that does
not support the peace process.
"Jews and Gentiles alike
should stand up for Israel,"
he said.
Organizers of the Human
Rights Plea were pleased
with the turnout. "I saw a lot
of new faces, people not
known as activists in the
community," said Jeannie
Weiner, chairman of the
Jewish Community Council's
Soviet Jewry Committee.
"Probably 300 postcards,
Chanukah cards (for re-
fuseniks) and petitions were
signed."
The 1986 Human Rights
Plea for Soviet Jews was
sponsored by the Soviet
Jewry Committee and the
B'nai B'rith Women's Coun-
cil.
