FINE JEWELERS

W

e have been treated
to a sad and em-
barrassing anthol-
ogy," intoned the melodious
voice and familiar face of
newsman Bernard Kalb.
This is a terrible embar-
rassment to the unmatchable
country — the United
States," he told an Allied
Jewish Campaign audience
Tuesday night at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
Witty, urbane and a
dynamic speaker, Kalb in-
jected humor and anecdotes
from his two-year career as
State Department spokesman
for Secretary of State George
Shultz into his 45-minute
talk. Kalb was a last-minute
substitute for ABC Washing-
ton correspondent Sam
Donaldson, who had to re-
main in the capital because
of the congressional hearings
on the Iran arms sale-contra
funding scandal.
Iran and the Nicaraguan
contras were the continuing
thread in Kalb's remarks and
in questions posed by the
audience. "There is a na-
tional hunger for the raw in-
formation," Kalb said, "that
won't be covered by mirrors,"
press bashing or blaming
Cabinet members.
Kalb quit the State De-
partment post last spring
after learning that he had
been given false information
to disseminate to the press on
the U.S. bombing of Libya.
"Since I knew nothing about
it (the Iran-contra connec-
tion) when I was State De-
partment spokesmen, I can
talk about it now
authoritatively," Kalb joked.
His wide-ranging speech
included a number of humor-
ous observations:

,

• "It's a pleasure to be
here, and other than that I
have no comment."
• "The words of diplomats
are dipped in latex — they
can be stretched in so many
ways."
• "The summa cum laude
award in ambiguity goes to
(former Secretary of State)
Alexander Haig."
• "During my two years as
State Department spokes-
man, my brother Marvin's
program, Meet The Press, was
better than it had ever been.
I gave Marvin the questions,
and I gave Shultz the an-
swers."
Kalb also is a serious ob-
server of the Washington
scene, and he exhibited a
personal embarrassment and
anger over the current situa-
tion:
• "An ambassador in Wash-
ington gave a toast recently,
describing ambassadors as
persons who go abroad to lie
for their country. 'Here,' the
ambassador said, 'you don't
have to go abroad."
• "Schultz has a difficult
itinerary — opposing arms to
Iran and supporting the
President of the United
States ... The gap between
Shultz's perception and the
Administration's version is a
cutting x-ray."
On that score, the White
House felt "it had a monopoly
of wisdom," could "short cir-
cuit the cheeks and balances,
could ignore the State De-
partment," and allow the Na-
tional Security Council to go
its own way. "Spare parts to
Iran made spare parts of the
State Department," Kalb
said.
Secretary of State Shultz
hired Kalb, and Kalb's re-
spect for his former boss
showed through his remarks.
