THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Sen. Paul Simon (D-Ill.) spoke on his fight for Soviet Jews
Monday night.
Senator Urges Strong
Stand For Soviet Jews
DAVID HOLZEL
Staff Writer
A
11 Americans need to
stand up on the issue
of Soviet Jews. This
was the thrust of the message
delivered to a Detroit audi-
ence Monday night by Sen.
Paul Simon (D-I11.).
Speaking to over 400
people at Southfield-Lathrup
High School for the 1986
Human Rights Plea for
Soviet Jews, Simon said that
although the situation for
Jews in the USSR is better
than 20 years ago, that situa-
tion is still not good. "There
is still a great, great

vile reiiig-enix couple par-
ticularly close to the senator's
heart is Naum and Inna
Meiman. Naum "is the only
one left from the old Helsinki
Watch Group," he said.
Simon visited the couple on
his past trips to the Soviet
Union.
"Each day on the floor of
the U.S. Senate, I talk a few
minutes about the Meimans,"
he told his Detroit audience.
Inna has had four operations
for cancer on her neck. The
couple would like to spend
what little time is left to
them in Israel, he said.
Simon, who visited the
USSR four times, stated
flatly that there has been no
improvement in the treat-
ment of Soviet Jews under
the regime of Mikhail Gor-
bachev.
"There have been a few
dramatic cases, like Yuri
0 rlov and Anatoly
Shcharansky, but not too
many of the non-dramatic
cases." There continue to be
arrests for studying Hebrew,
as well as police harassment
and beatings, he asserted.
Couples remain divided.
The plain-speaking former
newspaper publisher and
editor revealed that in a re-
cent meeting with Sen. Gary
Hart (D-Colo.), Gorbachev
warned not "to make too
many ripples on these cases."
"Our experience is fairly
clear," Simon said. "If we
could get results (through
quiet diplomacy), we would.
Until that day comes we have
to continue to make this
issue public and to put as
much pressure on as we can.
"We have no choice," he

Simon, who is -not -JeWish,___
gave an account of his visit to
the Leningrad Synagogue. He
spoke to the rabbi and the
congregation's president, both
appointed by the Soviets and
unwilling to speak freely.
"I asked the rabbi how
many people there were in
his congregation. He replied,
'We don't keep track of statis-
tics like that,' which is the
first time I've ever met a
rabbi who's said that," the
senator noted wryly.
Inside the synagogue there
were "11 or 12 very old men.
Upstairs there were five very
old women." This in a com-
munity of 600,000 Jews.
The Illinois senator gave
his audience suggestions on
how to show their concern for
Soviet Jews:
"Every time we have a
chance, remind Soviet leaders
of (Soviet Jews') importance.
When there are Soviets visit-
ing, tell them about your
concerns.
