when I was a graduate stu-
dent at Wayne State Univer-
sity. On that day our psy-
chology professor, Dr. Powell,
a gentile, dealt with this sub-
ject. To my surprise, he de-
scribed in detail the tradi-
tional Jewish practices. He
called them "a psychological
masterpiece."
In the hour of bereavement
which comes to all, Jewish
mourners are fortunate that
our tradition enfolds them
with time-tested ways of con-
solation and renewal.

David Holzel's article on
Jewish burial and mourning
practices was very interest-
ing. With regard to Rabbi
Schnipper's observation that
in some places in Europe a
coffin was not used, I would
like to point out that most
people in Israel are not
buried in coffins.
The principal exception to
this standard in Israel are
soldiers killed in action. They
are all buried in coffins so as
not to cause additional pain
and anguish to the families of
those whose bodies suffered
such massive damage that
burial in a shroud was no
longer possible.

Single-Issue
Fundamentals
I feel compelled to respond
to the well-intentioned corn-
ments of Mrs. Duva ("Single-
Issue Fundamentals," Nov.
21) in order to correct mis-
quotations and cliches.
To set the record straight, I
must repeat that though I
oppose school prayers for
multiple reasons, I do not re-
gard the issue's proponents as
my enemies and I welcome
their support for Israel. In
my opinion their objective is
not anti-pluralism, but moral
responsibility.
I may add that I favor
women's rights, and am not
against abortion. I only decry
abortion as a substitute for
birth control (cheaper and
more available). I equally
find teenage pregnancy as a
career an anti-social phenom-
enon.
Mrs. Tate does not seems to
discriminate between the
Jewish issues and general so-
cial problems that may be re-
solved in the usual demo-
cratic fashion. Her reference
to increased crime as a result
of the Holocaust and religious
fanaticism seems far-fetched.
She does not mention drugs
or the loss of moral responsi-
bility of the "me" generation.
However, I do agree that
Judaism includes compassion
and concern for other people.
Poverty is not a disease; it is
a symptom, and rehabilita-
tion and treating the cause,
whatever it may be, is more
