from a practice which was
alien to their faith.
How many people are
aware that George Washing-
ton had read and borrowed a
plan from the Book of Mac-
cabees? He set up a dummy
camp to lure the British, and
stationed a small force
around the camp. When the
enemy attacked, the Ameri-
can forces ambushed them
and won the battle, much as
Judah Maccabee had done to
the Syrians.
There is no need to be
envious of the observances of
other religions. The exciting
tale of Chanukah is replete
with heroes to admire and a
heritage that should instill
pride in any Jew.
A sage, in discussing his
religion with a Christian,
simply explained, "That
which makes me a good
Christian in your eyes,
makes you a good Jew in
mine."
When we as Jews under-
stand this concept and accept
the great virtues in every as-
pect of Judaism, truly a great
miracle shall happen here.

We commend you for the
fine article about Conrad
Giles and his ascendency to
the presidency of the Jewish
Welfare Federation ("A
Prescription for Progress,"
Nov. 14).
For nearly ten years, Dr.
Giles has been a selfless pro-
vider of volunteer services as
an outstanding pediatric
ophthalmologist at the De-
troit institute for Children.
Many youngsters have bene-
fited from his professional
skill. But those of us who
have come to be colleagues
with him. have benefited as
well.
He candidly demands that
all of us who work with him
measure up to his high
standards of service; it's a re-
quirement we welcome since
it is consistent with our 66
years of service to disabled
youngsters.
We often view articles such
as this one to be "halo polish-
ing." Dr. Giles has a halo; it
merits polishing. Your de-
scription of him was no
media hype; it was fact.

I was bothered by your
poor taste and insensitivity
in your obituary of Judge S.
Jerome Bronson. I don't think
it was necessary to mention
"a self inflicted gunshot
wound on Nov. 14 hours after
being arraigned on bribery
charges" in his obituary
notice.
This was not a news item
but a final mention of a
man's life. Out of respect to
his family his obituary could
have been written with better
taste.

I read with dismay The
Jewish News' obituary of
Judge S. Jerome Bronson
(Nov. 21). The item was
tasteless, unnecessarily
mean, and surely must have
pained his wife, children and
parents.
It seems to me that an
obituary should reflect the to-
tality of a person's life. You
chose rather to accentuate
the last few atypical days and
hours. A little research would
have revealed to you the S.
Jerome Bronson who well
served this community and
state for decades and who
was an important asset to the
Jewish community. His
memory in our Jewish News
should not have required this
kind of defense.

will accede to the teacher's

will have the satisfaction of
knowing that you did not
perpetuate the Chanukah-

It is conceivable that a
dialogue could be arranged
between representatives of
local Jewish organizations or
the rabbis and the school
superintendent to explain the
Jewish position on religious
observances in the school and
some middle ground of com-
promise could be reached.
Rehearsals for the Christ-
mas assembly usually start
just after Thanksgiving. In
one school, several Jewish
children requested not to par-
ticipate in the school's play,
and the principal "graciously"
excused them. For 30 min-
utes each day during the
three or four weeks between
Thanksgiving and the year-
end break, the children spent
time in the library doing
busy work. They may have
felt left out or different from
their fellow students, but
they took pride and comfort
in their decision to abstain
