I have proposed that the
legislature enact a lew that
requires a person to be an at-
torney in good standing for at
least five years before he can
become a candidate for judi-
cial office.
Recognizing the awesome
responsibility a judge pos-
sesses, there certainly should
be a requirement of at least a
few years before a person
should be permitted to as-
sume judicial responsibilities.
A judge's decision affects a
person's freedom and prop-
erty; therefore, a judge
should certainly have legal
and courtroom experience be-
fore attaining such a position.
Presently, 25 states require
-
-intreuiee" --ittve 'more
becoming eligible for a judge-
ship. Such a statute would
require more than just a
good, political, electable
name in order to become a
judge.

Did They Know
What They Said?
The very eminent Rabbi M.
Robert Syme has a valid
point in advocating pleasant-
ness in printed references to
non-Jews (Letters, Oct. 31).
This is consonant with the
teachings of our • sacred writ-
ings ... Frankly, though, de-
spite the rabbi's seeming as-
sumption to the contrary, few
people, I dare say, know the
etymological derivation of the
word shikse, against which
the rabbi is up in arms, se-
eing that according to him it
stems from the Hebrew ‘-
sheketz, meaning "dirt."
Presumably the masculine of
it, sheigets, has a similar de-
rivitiveness. It is gravely to
be doubted if the subjects
thus named have the foggiest
notion of what it is about ...

Arson Suspects
Arrested
Paris (JTA) — The four
young men arrested in
Rumania for burning a
synagogue in the Moldavian
town of Bohush will be tried
for arson "in the near fu-
ture," the Federation of
Rumanian Jewish Com-
munities announced in Bur-
charest.
The names of the suspects
have not been released. They
are aged between 17-28 and
robbery is believed to have
been their motive. The
Jewish janitor at the
synagogue was stabbed in the
course of the crime. The fire
is believed to have been
started by two candles burn-
ing in an adjacent shed.
