to be refused the use of oral
histories? The raise d'etre of
the Oral History Project was
to disseminate, not hide,
these personal accounts.
Omissions one and six can
only be explained by institu-
tional jealousy. The intrusion
of this phenomenon, by a
man who condemned the
awarding of the Nobel Peace
Prize to Elie Wiesel (Detroit
News, Oct. 22), has no place
in Holocaust education.
Without demeaning an
otherwise capable staff, it is
incredible that the HMC em-
ploys no professional
educator, let alone Holocaust
educator. Such is not due to a
lack _ of_ talent in this area.
Holocaust educators as Sid
Bolkosky and Prof. Michael
Kerestasy, Wayne State Uni-

versity professor of library
science, survivor and interna-
tional authority on Holocaust
bibliographies, is simply
self-defeating.
To rectify these glaring
omissions, it is time for the
HMC leadership to activate
the dormant Academic Advi-
sory Committee. It is time to
appoint an educational direc-
tor with the expertise to ad-
dress these issues.
Prof. Raul Hilberg, the
world's foremost Holocaust
scholar, states, "The research
that is done now or within
the next few years, will de-
termine attitudes in the next
century." A shift in emphasis
to educational research and
insure that the term "Zachor"
will not die with the survivor
generation.

Book Not Endorsed
By Akiva School

Your last issue noted that
the Akiva Hebrew Day
School PTA would be cospon-
soring the appearance of the
author of the book the Ritual
Bath. While the Akiva family
strongly supports the book
fair and has been an active
sponsor for many years, we
feel compelled to inform the
community that this year's
choice of book was made
without our approval.
The Ritual Bath may very
well be a fine book in the
eyes of some. However, its
content and verbiage is such
that sponsorship by Akiva
Hebrew Day School or any of
its affiliate organizations
would be inappropriate.
While we cannot formally
withdraw our sponsorship, we
want to make clear that
Akiva does not promote this
style of literature. Of course,
we have every hope that next
year we will be consulted in a
timely fashion as to the book
selection.

Thanked

Kol Hakavod and Todah
Rabah to the following rabbis
and their congregations, who,
without any hesitation in-
vited Vladimir Magarik to
• speak during Rosh Hashanah
• services on behalf of his son
• Alexei, now a prisoner in the
gulag of the USSR: Rabbi
Milton Arm, Cong. Beth
Achim; Rabbi Eliezer Cohen,
Young Israel of Oak Woods;
Rabbi Stanley Rosenbaum,
Cong. B'nai Moshe; and

Rabbi Lane Steinger, Temple
Emanu-El. They all did fol-
low up activites on behalf of
Alexei, and Temple Emanu-
El formally adopted him.
Now Alexei's life is in
danger. A father pleads for
help for his son, and the
above rabbis and their con-
gregations showed the true
meaning of Judaism: helping
each other and trying to save
a life in danger.
In March 1986, at the air-
port in Tbilisi, "drugs" were
"found" in Alexei's bags, after
the authorities had taken the
bags, and then returned them
to him. He was arrested im-
mediately. The "trial" was
held in June 1986; he was
"convicted" of drug possession
and sentenced to spend three
long years in a labor camp

Letters and cables must be
sent immediately to Secre-
tary of State George Shultz,
State Department, Washing-
ton, D.C. 20520 and to the
former ambassador to the
U.S. from the Soviet Union,
Mr. Anatoly Dobrynin, The
Kremlin, Moscow, USSR.
Please insist in your com-
munications that Alexei be
released immediately from
the labor camp, and that
Alexei and his family be
allowed to join his father and
sister in Israel.
These actions against
Alexei are violations of the
Helsinki Accords and other
international agreements
that the Soviets have signed
with regard to human rights.
There can be no trust on any
agreements while the Soviets
continue to violate these
agreements on Human Rights
