LISTENING POST

DANNY RASKIN

THE PROMISING NEW
drug treatment for AIDS now
has two Michigan connections
. . . Wall Street Journal of
Oct. 17 featured a front-page
story on Dr. Samuel Broder
of the National Institutes of
Health ... and his struggle
to break through red tape to
use the promising new AZT
drug ... In 1961, the chemi-
cal compound was formulated
by Dr. Jerome Horwitz of the
Michigan Cancer Foundation
... but shelved when not
found useful in cancer treat-
ment and research.
Dr. Broder grew up in Oak
Park and is a University of
Michigan grad ... Dr. Hor-
witz lives in Oak Park and is
a long-time member of Cong.
B'nai Moshe with Dr.
Broder's parents, Mayer and
Mary Broder ... Despite
their close associations, the
two scientists never collabo-
rated in the research.
CONGRATS ... to Becky
Felch ... on her birthday ...
spent in New York celebrat-
ing someone else's birthday
. It was number one for
grandson Jonathan, son of
Dr. Richard and Bernadette
Felch.

ping spree, "Shopping For
The Cure," Nov. 16, 6 to 9
p.m.
Marsha Gordon, president
of the local chapter, says that
folks can pay for the gift pur-

chases with check made out

excited ... It's been a great
year for them ... with
thanks to so many for their

Hall, Orchard Lake Rd., and
the remote recording sessions

dimension in entertainment.
Very important ... Guest

pliance with federal copyright

ogist, may have to become a
full-time author ... His sixth
book on therapy, has just
been published by Jossey-
Bass in San Francisco ... Dr.
Kottler describes some "self-
deceptions" to which
therapists are vulnerable, in-
cluding belief in their own
omnipotence and hiding be-
hind a facade of perfec-
tionism.
