Oct. 17 featured a front-page
story on Dr. Samuel Broder
of the National Institutes of
Health ... and his struggle
to break through red tape to
use the promising new AZT
drug ... In 1961, the chemi-
cal compound was formulated
by Dr. Jerome Horwitz of the
Michigan Cancer Foundation
... but shelved when not
found useful in cancer treat-
ment and research.
Dr. Broder grew up in Oak
Park and is a University of
Michigan grad ... Dr. Hor-
witz lives in Oak Park and is
a long-time member of Cong.
B'nai Moshe with Dr.
Broder's parents, Mayer and
Mary Broder ... Despite
their close associations, the
two scientists never collabo-
rated in the research.
