Brandon Tartikoff once suggested to Robert Penn Warren,
how to "improve" a D.H. Lawrence novel.

Especially the scowl on his
face.
Brandon Tartikoff is the
Mr. T they're talking about
at NBC these days, the
entertainment president
who's entertaining millions of
viewers with his very suc-
cessful mix of fun and fan-
tasy.
Indeed, Tartikoff is heading
his own A-Team, filled with
smash-hit comedies (The
Cosby Show, Cheers, The
Golden
Girls),
enduring
dramas (Hill Street Blues, St.
Elsewhere) and plenty of ac-
tion (Miami Vice).
There could be no better
mini-series than the NBC
story, with Tartikoff, a boyish
37-year-old gent who had
survived a bout with
Hodgkin's Disease 14 years
ago, saving the day for the
last-place network now
chanting, "We are number
one!"
Indeed, if NBC is the Cin-
derella network, then Bran-
don Tartikoff is the most
charming of Prince Charm-
ings.
But charm won't stop the
pumpkins from rolling in and
ruining the ball. And when it
comes to avoiding pumpkins,
Tartikoff is the one who
knows how to squash the
competition.
Just look at this guy: He
loves to talk about TV. Not
just the winners that he has
shepherded through the
