WRITES . "Downtown Pon-
tiac, like many downtowns in the
country, suffers from the effects of
urban sprawl. However, hope is
not lost. According to the Interna-
tional Council of Shopping Cen-
ters, there is a national trend
toward urban redevelopment.
More than ever, developers are
looking back to the downtowns
they had once abandoned, as new
areas for redevelopment . . . A
common theme for this rede-
velopment has been coined by the
Rouse Co. Their festival market
place strategy has proven suc-
cessful in cities all over the coun-
try. The success of these festival
market places seems to center
around the desire of the general
public to hear, touch and smell
their surroundings. People seem
to miss that sensory feeling which
the urban experience provides.
This urban experience can cer-
tainly be many different things to
many different people. However,
no matter what the list of people
may include, it is certain to in-
clude entertainment as a tradi-
tional urban experience. Whether
it is theater, music, dining or
dancing, urban areas have tradi-
tionally been the hub of these ac-
tivities. It is for this reason Pon-
