The Situation Of
Nicaraguan Jews
A great deal of confusion sur-
rounds the question of anti-
semitism in Nicaragua. I would
like to share some thoughts
based upon my 20 years' in-
volvement in Latin American
studies, numerous professional
contacts with scholars who know
Nicaragua well, and my own re-
search on the Jewish com-
munities of Latin AmeriCa.
Jews in Catholic countries
live with a substantially higher
rate of anti-semitism than do we
who live in pluralistic societies
such as the United States. Like
fish swimming in water, many
Latin American Jews are un-
aware of this environmental
anti-semitism, which excludes
them from central institutions
and social circles. For example, I
would be deeply troubled if the
U.S. Army were to cease com-
missioning Jewish officers;
many Argentine Jews are com-
pletely untroubled by the exclu-
sion of Jews from commissioned
officer rank in their own army.
As one Argentine Jew remarked
to me: If I want a career in the
army, I will go to Israel."
A second factor to be aware of
is that politics in Latin America
is often a zero-sum game: per-
sons on the losing side in a civil
war are often forced to emigrate.
It may not be fair, it is not
democratic, but that is the way
the game is played. In fact, exile
is a humane alternative among
far worse possibilities.
In that light, Nicaraguan
Jewish business persons who did
business with Somoza (and
everyone who did business in
Nicaragua had to deal the dic-
tator at hand) paid the same
penalty as Nicaraguan non-Jews
when Somoza fell. They were
allowed to leave the country,
but they lost their property.
Both these situations are well
known to any Jew who lives in
Latin America: there is a con-
tinuous high level of anti-
semitism derived from the cul-
ture; and a turn of the political
wheel will put the outs in, the
ins out. There is absolutely no
surprise here.
Whey, then, has the fate of
Nicaraguan Jews become the
subject of such heated debate in
the U.S.? Because President Re-
agan chose to make it one. We
are therefore entitled to ask
why he chose to do so. The Jews
of Syria, for example, are more
numerous and in worse shape.
The President posed the situa-
tion of Nicaraguan Jewish exiles
as a matter of freedom of reli-
gion for one reason only: to line
us all up behind his policy of
financing and supporting the
counterrevolutionary force in
Nicaragua, whom he calls free-
dom fighters.
The real issue for North
American Jews is not whether
there is anti-semitism in
Nicaragua; and not whether
Somoza's supporters were com-
pelled to leave the country. The
real issue is whether we will
permit ourselves to be manip-
ulated in the service of a foreign
policy we may or may not agree

Staff Report
Southfield Police said this
week there are no clues as to
who was responsible for the
vandalism of the interior of
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah during
Passover.
On April 25, vandals broke
through a back window in the
Southfield school, smashing
classroom door windows and
some educational materials and
wrecking office equipment be-
yond repair.
According to Rabbi Norman
Kahn, executive vice president,
and Rabbi E.B. Freedman, ad-
ministrative director, the school
still is in desperate need of
office equipment in good work-
ing order, particularly a copier,
computers, typewriters, adding
machines, slide projector, film
projector and mimeograph-
duplicating machine.
Funded by tuition and dona-
tions, the Orthodox day school
has suffered a financial setback
owing to the damage, which is
estimated in the tens of
thousands.
