Dealing With
Jews, Converts
In the article, "Who Is a
Jew?" (April 4), Rabbi Roman,
in grand Talmudic tradition, an-
swers questions with questions.
However, he departs with that
tradition, in that his questions,
rather than being rhetorical
ones which Socratically lead to
some intended inevitable con-
clusion, have, in fact, simple
and straight-forward answers
which considerably weaken his
argument. Following are some
of Rabbi Roman's questions, ac-
companied by feasible answers:
"Who would dare say that
Ben-Gurion's grandchildren ...
are not Jewish?"
Anyone who does not recog-
nize patrilineal descent as a
legitimate determination of
Jewish identity. This includes
all of the leaders, and
presumably all of the members,
of both the Conservative and
Orthodox movements.
"Can I say to them (those
whose conversions were per-
, formed by Rabbi Roman) now
that their conversion was in-
valid?"
If you yourself believe that
those conversions were impro-
per, you can and must tell those
whom you have converted. They
will probably be angry and re-
sentful, and want to know why
you performed them in the first
place if they had no validity.
If you continue to believe, as
seems to be the case, that your
conversions were valid ones,
then the real question is, can
others, who have different
halachic standards than your
own, tell them that their con-
version was invalid. The an-
swer: others can and will
press their view that' many Gen-
tiles who sincerely desired to
become Jews, were conde-
scendingly misled by many cler-
gymen, who assured them that
the conversion ' process is some-
thing less than a rigorous, chal-
lenging_ ritual, characterized by
the utmost sanctity which
thousands of years of tradition
have imbued it with.
They will express their sym-
pathy with these well-meaning
people, who, desirous of belong-
ing to the Jewish nation, have
been defrauded into thinking
that a religious conversion is
something akin to a civic-
cultural transferral of associa-
tion, when in fact it'is a decision
of religious conscience of the
greatest gravity.
"these people honestly believe
that they are' JeWish. How do
we come along years later and
say to them that they're not?"
It is not easy, but it- is possi-
ble. It requires honesty, per-
sonal fortitude and courage. One
should approach the would-be
convert and say in an under-
standing tone of voice: "I'm
sorry; you have been 'deceived.
Whoever converted you cyni-
cally underestimated your sin-
cerity, and feared that if he told
you what a proper conversion
entailed, that you would become
discouraged. Perhaps you would
have reconsidered your mar-
riage to a Jewish spouse, or
.perhaps you would have pro-
ceeded with the marriage, but
