The Terrorism
And The Refugees
Newsweek for April 7 com-
prehensively dissects the minds
of the Arab terrorists but Nord-
land and Williamson missed a
salient point in discussing "Why
the hate — Why They Kill."
The sub-human tactics em-
ployed by these terrorists ante-
dated the refugee camps by
many years.
When Lebanon was a prosper-
ous oasis of urbane, educated
civility, ruled equally by Mos-
lems and Christians, terrorism
reared its ugly head as certain
Moslem sects chafed under the
restraints of the civilized ad-
ministrations. Purported dis-
crimination led, eventually, to
changes in the equal division of
power and finally. to rule by ter-
ror, a blatant attempt to destroy
the Christian minority.
Civil war led to the building
of armies by various Moslem
and Christian groups. Of course,
these were financed and armed
by hostile nations, each seeking
hegeniony. Oil fueled the fires
as Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia
supported different factions.
Sunnis, Shiites and numerous
sub-Sects were the ground troops
of the various interests.
. As always, Israel — the
Zionists — were a convenient
scapegoat. Instead of .resettling
the so-called refugees as did Is-
rael, the major. Arab nations
drove them out, into the U.N.
camps where they festered, hat-
ing not their real oppressors but
the Israeli in whose territory
they were permitted to live.
Even those educated in the
school and universities of Israel,
healed in the hospitals of Israel,
permitted to emigrate to the
U.S., developed a common bond
of Pan-Arabism.
Those who recognized the fact
that it was not Israel but the
common enemy, the feudal t he
who were responsible for
their "homelessness," were
either liquidated or terrorized.
The voices of reason were
muted.
Arab-Americans cringe under
the obloquy heaped onto their
heads for the cruelly, senseless
tactics of their cousins abroad.
No wonder Israel digs in its
heels at the thought of a gov-
ernment composed of all of these
warring factions; they have the
example of once-proud Lebanon
to stiffen their backs.
