PPS TV Show
Was Outrageous

The TV program "Flashpoint:
Israel and the Palestinians,"
shown on Public Television
(Channel 56) April 9, was so
outrageously biased as to make
a mockery of the fair and objec-
tive reporting public television
purports to represent.
We refer particularly to the
_ program's third segment, "Occu-
pied Palestine," a crazy-quilt of
alleged Israeli "atrocities" which
would make Yassir Arafat gloat.
What made this segment so
glaringly out of focus was the
visual recital of Israeli misdeeds
vis-a-vis the Palestinians with-
out reference to the time-frame
in which they are said to have
occurred and to Arab acts of vio-
lence which provoked them.
The viewer is thus treated to
scenes depicting the trial and
tribulations of Palestinian
Arabs over a period of almost 40
years including the havoc and.
: dislocations engendered by four
wars. These cleverly-selected
film clippings have been com-
pressed into what purports to be
a visual presentation of contem-
porary life it' "Occupied Pales-
tine." The program paints a
lurid picture of Arab disloca-
tions and sporadic flight — a di-
rect and inevitable consequence
of the 1948 Arab assault against
the fledgling Jewish State —
while ignoring the devastation
in the Jewish sector and the
enormous loss of life suffered by
the Israeli defenders 6,000
dead, almost one percent of the
Jewish population.
The show focused on the
stringent security measures in
the areas occupied by Israel fol-
lowing the ware of aggression•
launched by Egypt in, 1967. It
totally ignored the rash of ter-
rorist acts perpetrated by the
newly-established PLO and its
cohorts within Israel, which
forced the IDF to resort to house
demolitions in villages harbor-
ing the terrorists and to insti-
tute administrative detentions
•and crowd-dispersal measures
against real and suspected law-
breakers.
"Occupied Palestine" portrays
young. Israeli soldiers patroling
hostile Arab neighborhoods as
trigger-happy warriors eager to
inflict bodily harm upon "inno-
c'ent" Arab youngsters. The fact
is that Israeli troops serving in
the "occupied" areas have been

constantly exposed to hostile
provocations and ever-present
danger. The few soldiers who
over-reacted by using excessive
force in apprehending or detain-
ing "trouble-makers" have been
disciplined and even courtmar-
tialed by military authorities.
Resort to house-demolitions was
sanctioned only in cases • where
the house-owner was proved to
be a member of a terrorist cell
and usually in the aftermath of
a terrorist act traced to a par-
ticular house or village.
The itinerant or "homeless"
Arab portrayed in the show are
undoubtedly film-clippings of
the 1948, 1967 and 1973 wars;
hence, their "linkage" to "Occu-
pied Palestine" of the 1980s is .a
fraud. Equally mischievous and
biased are films of fundraising
dinners on behalf of Israel in'
the. United States and the selec-;
tive excerpts of speeches deliv-
ered at those functions.
Presumably, putting the spot-
light on the fundraising func-
tions was meant to embellish
the canard voiced by Arab' prop-
agandists — and rehashed in
the show — that Zionism was a
conspiracy fueled by "interna-
tional Jewish capital." Even the
old Zionist refrain, "Who will
build the Galilee?" which ante-
dates the establishment of Israel
by many years, was used to
illustrate the Zionists' designs
upon an "Arab-free" Galilee.
The program's captioned dis-
claimer that it reflects "partisan
views" of the parties to the con-
flict is misleading. While the
first two parts of "Flashimint"
were reasonably, balanced, the
hist segment, "Occupied Pales-
tine," was unadulterated anti-
Israel propaganda, unredeemed
by the commentators' concluding
remarks. •
"Occupied Palestine" is re-
plete with half-truths, ,distor-
tions, "staged" scenes and
malicious innuendoes. The PBS
affiliates in New York, Wash-
ington and Minneapolis, which
refused to carry the show,' used .
good judgment and displayed a
healthy regard for truth and the
sensibilities of many of their
viewers,' Unfortunately, De-'.
troit's public television did not:
