Lisa Loewenthal will share her
bat mitzvah with a Soviet Jewish
girl, Geulah Ghinis, on Saturday
at Young . Israel of Southfield.
Geulah is the daughter of Boris
and Irina Ghinis, who have been
denied exit visas from the USSR.
Geulah's father attended the
mechanical-mathematical divi-
sion of the University of Moscow
in 1972. Upon graduation, he
worked with IBM machines and
began work on a doctoral thesis.
After submitting his emigra-
tion application' Ghinis' research
was, terminated and he has not
been able to work at his chosen
profession.
Geulah's mother works in the
medical field. She is a graduate of
Moscow Medical Institute and
worked in a Moscow hospital arti-
ficial kidney laboratory as a med-
ical research technician. She also
is unable to work. at her chosen
•
profession.
The Ghinises have participated
in religious study groups and both
