New York (JTA) — The
Jewish Community Relations
Council has added $4,000 to the
$1,000 offered as a reward for
information leading to the ar-
rest and conviction of the van-
dals who smashed windows of 13
Jewish-owned or Jewish-
identified stores in Boro Park
earlier this month.
The $1,000 was posted by As-
semblyman Dov Hilkind, who
represents the Boro Park dis-
trict, and the 13th Street Mer-
chants association's president,
Mendy Klein and vice president,
Joseph Goldstein. The van-
dalism occurred along a ten-
block stretch of that avenue, the
neighborhood's main shopping
center.

Among all her possessions, an elegant woman would
rank a very few as irreplaceable assets. Her Lassale
quartz watch, sensuously slim, perfectly designed,
delicately illuminated with diamonds, would surely be
one. Choose all gold-tone with four diamonds. Or
gold-tone with either white or brown dial and six
diamonds. Lassale. The heritage is obvious.

formerly known as NAIL ART
would like to announce their new name

ing: "How is it even possible to
imagine a large Jewish commu-
nity in the new Jerusalem ...
without a central synagogue
which one can aptly call the
Great Synagogue of Jerusalem?
How is it possible ... that
`Jerusalem the Great and Holy'
has no large central
synagogue?"
A living religious memorial to
"all those who died so that we,
the Jewish People may live," the
Synagogue was dedicated on
Chanukah 1983 with Dr.
Maurice Jaffe, chairman of the
World Union of Synagogues, as
its prime mover.
Chief Rabbis Kook and Meir
had declared half a century ago
that "The time demands that
the house ... be a high and
exalted, great and revered
edifice. A building which will be
the glory of the Jewish People,
the jewel of the Land of Israel
and crowning splendor of
Jerusalem."
The Great Synagogue on King
George Street is a edifice of
Jerusalem stone with a high
central tower containing five
stained glass windows, designed
by the artist Regina Heim of
Zurich. Though more than half
of the $14-15 million cost was
donated by Sir Isaac and the
late Lady Wolfson of London
and the remainder by Jews
throughout the world, the ex-
penditure of such a sum on one
building caused quite a con-
troversy when the synagogue
first opened.
While some admired the inter-
ior, others called it ostentatious
and pretentious. 1700 guests,
including the Prime Minister,
President, Chief Rabbis and
local and foreign dignitaries,
attended the dedication; others
like Jerusalem mayor Teddy
Kollek stayed away, stating that
such a large sum could have
funded twenty local synagogues,
youth centers, etc. Yet such pro-
tests were dismissed, since the
funds were solicited from people
who were specifically interested
in the construction of a Great
Synagogue as the "gift of the
Jewish People ... to the 'People
who dwell in Zion."' Neverthe-
less, the controversy remains.
