world. Denmark was among the
countries to do so – with an em-
phasis on that nation's liberation
from German domination.
Rabbi Frederick E. Werbell of
New York, a native . of Sweden, is
among the organizers of com-
memorative events marking the
rescue of the 8,000 Danish Jews
who were spirited away to Sweden
on fishing boats in a daring over-
night operation conducted by con-
cerned Danish Christians.
Rabbi Werbell inspires an
interest by organizing tourist
groups to participate in the
Danish liberation anniversary
celebration.
Additionally, Rabbi Werbell
renders an important service, in a
documentary sense, with his arti-
cles, notably one in the Jewish
Week in which he relates about
the Melchior family of Denmark.
It is interesting to learn from
this essay. that the Melchior fam-
ily has a- record of seven genera-
tions of active participants in
Danish affairs. The present Chief
Rabbi of Denmark, Bent Mel-
chior, succeeded his father, the
late Rabbi Marcus Melchior in
that post. -
Rabbi Bent Melchior's brother,
Arne Melchior, has in interesting
double role in Denmark — as cha-
zan (caaator)_of the leading con-
gregation and as a member of the
nation's official Cabinet, serving
as his country's Minister of
Transport, Communications and
Public Works,
There is much more to the fam-
ily record. Rabbi Bent Melchoir's
son, Rabbi Michael Melchior, is
the new rabbi of the 1,000-
member Jewish community.
Rabbi Werbell calls attention to
the fact that there has been no
rabbi since 1981, until Rabbi
Michael assumed his spiritual
post.
Also: a nephew of the Danish
rabbi, Uri Schwartz, son of Hilda
Melchior Schwartz is the rabbi of
the Helsinki synagogue, serving
the community's Jews.
Such is the record of the Mel-
chiors in their native and
neighboring countries. Notably,
the Melchiors are staunch
Zionists. The family often divides
residence between Denmark and
Israel.
Both Arni and Bent Melchior
served in the Hagana and fought
in the war for Israel's indepen-
dence.
There is an interesting angle to
the Zionism of the Melchiors.
Staunch Zionists, they do-not dis-
courage aliyah. But they seek
strength for their own Diaspora
community, believing that survi-
val for Danish Jewry is also im-
portant for Israel. Assimilation
and intermarriage predominate
in Denmark, but the Melchiors
never give up the struggle for a
strong JeWish community.
Rabbi Werbell helps provide a
deep interest in Scandinavian
Jewry with his tasks currently to
retain the memory of the great re-
scue effort on its ' 40th anniver-
sary.
Israel's Cures For Arab Ailments
.
Israel's doctors have for many
years served as the most impor-
tant peace emissaries in the Mid-
dle East. Arabs have gone to Is-
raeli hospitals searching for med-
ical help. Before statehood it was
common for Arabs from
everywhere to travel to Jewish-
administered hospitals in their ef-
forts to cure-illnesses.
Trachoma was a dreaded dis-
ease in the Middle East.. Israel
helped eliminate it - among the
Arab masses, just as it provided
cures for many other illnesses.
The Gabriel Cohen-edited
Jewish Post and Opinion carried
an item in a recent issue under the
headline "Where Arab Elite Go
for Medical Treatment," reveal-
ing interesting facts about the Is-
raeli medical role in the Middle
East. It contains a translated ac-
count of such services written in
Yiddish by B. Shem.
The The Post and Opinion reg-
ularly runs such items under the
heading "Digest of the Yiddish
Press." This calls for a deserved
tribute to Rabbi Samuel Silver,
who retired several years ago
from his Reform rabbinic post in
Connecticut and has taken up re-
sidence in Florida. The fact that
he studies and reviews the most
important items from Yiddish
publications renders him a special
place in Jewish journalism. He
helps retain a link between the
languages whenever important
facts are related in Yiddish and
merit sharing with readers. This
is a contribution to Jewish liter-
ary taskq ,dpsarying, apprecia-
tion.
In the current item, "Where
Arab Elite Go for Medical Treat-
ment," Rabbi Silver assists in
spreading th facts gathered in B.
Shem's Kempfer article:
Until I read it in the Kempfer I
didn't know that some 300
Arabs from various enemy
lands fight their way each year
to Israel for medical care
which they haven't been able
to get anywhere else. In a piece
by B. Shem we learn:
"Item. A Jordanian pilot had
a growth on his eye and in
England. he was told that the
only person who could help
him was a doctor in the Hadas-
sah Hospital in Jerusalem. He
crossed the Allenby Bridge
and, sure enough, was oper-
ated on successfully. He had
been venomously anti-Israel
but he sees things differently
now.
"Item. A Saudi princess was
barren and no one could help
her. Sterility in Arab countries
can lead to divorce, so she was
desperate. She smuggled her
way into Israel and was
treated by Prof. Menashe
ben-David at Hadassah Hospi-
tal, later became pregnant and
insisted on having her baby in
Israel. Mother and child did
well.
"Item. High-ranking associ-
ate of Syria's President Assad
brought his daughter to Israel
for successful treatment by
Prof. Percy in the Tel Ha-
