organization — may take on a
different light.
The objectives themselves are
admirable. More communication
is generally preferred to less.
However, right now we have a
growing elderly population. The
Home for the Aged will undoub-
tedly come under increasing
pressure and will need more
money. And, at the other end of
the age spectrum, consider that
$350,000 is about the entire al-
location by the JWF to all of the
day schools in Detroit!
Think of it ... the education
of Jewish youth in understand-
ing what it is to live like a
committed Jew, and being able
to actively demonstrate that
style of living, is worth about as
much as an outreach program to
tell other people about what
Jews are! A program which for
years has existed for who knows
why doing who knows what that
couldn't be and isn't being done
by volunteer organizations such
as the ADL.
Let's see an article which
studies, in depth, the unpardon-
ably low amount of funding for
Jewish education in Detroit.
And the growing need for elder
care. And let's also see the in-
clusion of some budget figures
in the next article about the
Jewish Community Council.

In your headline story of May
17, you report that the Rabbini-
cal Assembly (Conservative) has
banned from speaking at their
synagogues the 51 Members of
the Knesset who voted in favor
of amending the Law of Return
to include only those converts
undergoing conversion "accord-
ing to Halachah."
Detroit's Rabbi Efry Spectre,
who introduced the motion, ex-
plained, "We should not give
honor to those who do not rec-
ognize our validity." If this were
the true rationale behind the
Rabbinical Assembly's decision,
they ought to ban all Orthodox
Jews, none of whom recognize
the validity of Conservative
conversion. They ought to ban
Catholics, as they do not recog-
nize the validity of conversion of
members of their faith to
Judaism. They ought to come
out and say that they no longer
expect to be allowed to speak at
Reform temples as they them-
selves do not recognize conver-
sions and mixed marriages per-
formed by Reform rabbis.
In reality, the step taken by
Rabbi Spectre and his colleagues
is no more than a transparent
attempt to curry favor with Is-
rael's Labor Party. One can
readily understand the Conser-
vatives' wish to get a bigger
slice of the Israeli political pie.
But to couch this goal in terms
of loftier principles is an exam-
ple of the hypocrisy that has be-
come characteristic of the lead-
ers of that denomination.
