tions show a concern for the
survival and well-being of Is-
rael.
Millions of Christians have
not been prepared by church
teachings and pastoral guid-
ance to appreciate -Judaism.
They do not realize how Jews
understand their own cove-
nant history. They do not
perceive the ancient Jewish
dream of restoration in Eretz
Yisrael, so cannot know that
this vision is rooted in the
Scriptures that we, too, hold
sacred. Many Christians
seem more comfortable with
the concept of the "wander-
ing Jew," condemned to et-
ernal exile, than with the
reality of a sovereign Jewish
state. These distortions of
faith contribute to unbal-
anced negativism in some
Christian thinking toward
the State of Israel, often with
sad and disturbing effects.
We see it as urgent that
Christians speak out against
the vicious anti-Semitism
that hides under the cloak of
anti-Zionism. The rhetoric of
hatred against this move-
ment of Jewish indepen-
dence, which has become all
too common in certain cir-
cles, must be seen and re-
sisted as an attempt to dis-

In the name of morality
and truth, we call upon
members of the United Na-
tions to repudiate its resolu-
tion which declared Zionism
to be a form of racism. For
ten long years this infamous
statement has cast a serious
doubt on the U.N.'s adher-
ence to the principles on
which it was founded and
has contributed to its loss of
credibility. We urge leaders
in the United States to do
everything in their power to
remove this scandalous blot
from the record of the United
Nations.
As we commemorate the
days of liberation 40 years
ago, let history show that et-
ernal lessons have been
learned from the Holocaust.
Silence and indifference help
the forces of death, never the
victims. We devoutly pray
that those who died did not
lose their lives in vain.

`West Bank'
And The JTA

The Jewish Telegraphic
Agency (JTA) joins the U.S.
State Department/P.L.0./Arab
League/Communist effort to
sever the Jewish connection to
Eretz Yisrael (including
Jerusalem) by using the name
"West Bank," given by Jordan
during the brutal 19-year occu-
pation, rather than using the
Jewish names "Judea and
Samaria," the only names com-
monly used prior to that Arab
occupation.
The JTA in their efforts to
promote the Arab name for the
area, even stoop to distortion. In
the Detroit Jews News of May
10, the JTA report "Settlers Hit
Emigre Policy" tells that the
secretary of Jewish settlements
in Judea and Samaria says "...
there are 250 unoccupied flats
in the West Bank" and that "...
immigrants were not moved to
the West Bank." It is inconceiv-
able that the secretary of Jewish
settlements in Judea and
Samaria would call the area
"West Bank" and thereby indi-

Council's Role
Vs. Priorities

I read the article (May 24) on
the new president of the Jewish
Community Council of Greater
Detroit with much interest. Fi-
nally, after years of wonder, I
have heard a statement of some
objectives.
And what wonderful objec-
tives they are! The Jewish Wel-
fare Federation has apparently
agreed that it is worth about
$350,000 to "reach out" to our
black, Hispanic and Arab
neighbors. When you have that
number, the Jewish Community
Council's actions — as well as
the JWF's in supporting such an
