BARREL

Delicatessen-Restaurant on 12
Mile and Evergreen and in
Market Street Shoppes on
Northwestern are among few
places who make their own
Thousand Island dressing that
so many people love on sand-
wiches ... The Pickle Barrel
corned beef is considered by
many to be like a fine filet ...
tender and tasty ... Pickle ,=
Barrel also makes its own pick-
les in summer (June, July,
August and September).
ONE OF THE ONLY . . . if
not the only ... campaigns re-
lating to local immigrants from
Ellis Island ... is that of Ram's
Horn Restaurants and WXYT-
AM joining forces to help raise
money for Statue of Liberty
Fund by publishing a limited
edition poster that pays tribute
to Statue of Liberty and rich
ethnic heritage of Detroit.
Gus Kasapis, co-owner with
brothers of the Ram's Horn Res-
taurant says, "My brothers,
Gene and Steve, and I are very
proud to be a part of this deserv-
ing cause because many of our
family came through Ellis Is-
land, and we appreciate the
opportunity to show her (Statue
of Liberty) our gratitude for
welcoming our ancestors to this
country."
Those wishing to contribute to
the fund may purchase a poster
for $3 at any one of the 18
Metro Detroit area Ram's Horn
Restaurants ... They're big and
beautiful.

Weekend Festival is big thing in
Saline, Mich., May 4 - May 5 ...
with all proceeds to National
Kidney Foundation of Michigan
... It's sixth annual, and in con-
junction for second year, Health
Care Network, subsidiary of
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of
Michigan, will sponsor a major
hot air balloon race ... Chili
cook-off draws over 15,000 an-
nually to Saline fair grounds.
If you enjoy your "bowl 'o red"
at least once a week, whether it
be one-alarm, two-alarm, or
three-alarm (and providing it's
not a false alarm, which has no
chili in it at all) then you are
probably a "chilihead" ... But
don't worry, you are in the best
of company, along with L.B.
Johnson, Jesse James, and Will
Rogers.
Did you know that ... In Cin-
cinnati they put chocolate in
their chili? ... There's actually
a chili museum in Dallas,
Texas? ... Jesse James once re-
fused to rob a bank in McKin-
ney, Texas because his favorite
chili parlor was there? ... The
venerable Craig Claiborn,
judged the World Chili Cook-Off
in California in 1976? ... There
are over 600 recipes for chili on
file? But each believer knows for
sure his is the only true one? ...
Chili was born in a San Antonio
jail in the late 1800s?
