It is good that opposition to the
U.S. Holocaust Memorial is build-
ing (Jewish News, April 12). We
would like to point out that in
March 1982, Rabbi Meir Kahane
objected loudly to the waste of
then-$50 million dollars to com-
memorate dead Jews.
Now finally, the rest of the
Jewish community is coming to
realize the millions will do noth-
ing for the Jews that are living.
Let us see the same people who
push the Memorial, spend the mil-
lions on Jewish education for
children. Live Jews, aware and
practicing their religion and heri-
tage is the ultimate memorial to
those who were slaughtered.

The Jewish News has a respon-
sibility to the Detroit Jewish
community. By publishing arti-
cles such as "Don't Jump Mom"
and the one comparing Jewish
women to shiksas you shirk your
responsibility and do a great dis-
service to our community.
I expressed this view when I
participated in your survey and
hope you will learn more about
your readers.

Mrs. Bonnie Torgow

Confronting Soviets

Ih an article in your April 5th
edition you noted that the Detroit
Soviet Jewry Committee of the
Jewish Community Council was
present at the appearance of Oleg
Benyuhk at Wayne State Univer-
sity on March 25. You mentioned
that a letter written by David
Lebenbom, president of the Coun-
cil, was given to Mr. Benyukh by
Rabbi Spectre and by Joel Ger-
shenson. Your readers should
know that the DCSJ made prior
arrangements with the program's
sponsor to deliver a number of let-
ters to Mr. Benyukh after we were

denied a face to face meeting with
him.
Letters were presented from
Rabbi Stanley Rosenbaum,
president of the Rabbinical Corn-
mission, protesting the harass-
ment and arrests of Hebrew
teachers, and from Bob Arcand,
executive director of the Detroit j
Round Table of the National Con-
ference of Christians and Jews,
noting the same types of harass-
ment and arrests of all believers
in the Soviet Union.
We do not expect that these
three letters will change the re-
pressive policies of the Soviet
Union. But the lack of an appear-
ance by a Jewish group protesting
Soviet anti-Jewish policies, would
have a definite negative impact
upon Soviet Jewry. Soviet offi-
cials must be peacefully con-
fronted wherever they appear.
Our concern for our fellow Jews
must be made known at every
opportunity.

Keegstra Trial
Jury Chosen

Toronto (JTA) — A jury of ten
men and two women was chosen
last week in the trial of Jim
Keegstra, the former Eckville,
Alberta high school teacher ac-
cused of violating Canada's anti-
hate laws.
Keegstra was fired by the Al-
berta school board two years ago
after parents complained he was
teaching in his classes that Jews
are the root of all evil and the
Holocaust was a Jewish hoax. His
trial, the first test of Canadian
anti-hate legislation, opened last
Tuesday in Red Deer, Alberta. It
is expected to last at least two
months.
The Canadian Jewish congress
and B'nai B'rith have sent obser-
vers to monitor the proceedings.
