The U.S. has been a staunch

ternational borders of Arab Pales-
tine. Jimmy Carter does not tell
the truth. He is trying to
legitimize the Arab aggression
that seized Jerusalem's Old City
from the Jewish People and the
19-year illegal Arab occupation of
the city.
What Carter is saying is that
Israel should give up Jerusalem
and Judea-Samaria (he calls that
area the "West Bank," the name
given by Jordan during their oc-
cupation) and let it become a
"Palestinian homeland" — and
that will bring peace. But during
the 19-years that Jordan occupied
Judea, Samaria and Jerusalm's
Old City, artillery shells and ter-
rorists raids from that Arab-
occupied area killed 521 Israelis,
wounded 1,487 and caused exten-
sive and heavy property damage.
What blocked peace then?
Jimmy Carter is not on the side
of peace. He calls for America to
pressure Israel to accept the Arab
proposals. The elimination of Is-
rael — not peace — is the intent of
those proposals to take away
Jerusalem, the nation's capital, as
well as Judea and Samaria.
Judea-Samaria, besides being the
heartland of the Jewish state, also
provides the vital territorial
depth and the mountain barrier
along the Jordan River to hold
back tank assaults and provide
early warning time. It is a matter
of survival. An Israel readily able
to defend itself will discourage
Arab nations from launching new
and deadly assaults on the Jewish
state .. .

Former President Jimmy Car-
ter says he sees hope for peace in
the accord reached between King
Hussein of Jordan and Palestine
Liberation Organization chief
Yassir Arafat (The Jewish News,
April 5).
Carter is way wrong. There is
no peace for Israel in the Egypt-
PLO-Jordan proposals. Their
"peace-plan" calls for the terrorist
organization that specializes in
the murder of Jews to take over
Jerusalem, Israel's capital and
government center, and also to
take Over Judea and Samaria, the
heartland of the Jewish state and
absolutely vital to its defense.
What Egypt, Jordan and the PLO
are really calling for is the elimi-
nation of Israel.
Carter blames Israel for the
lack of peace because of their "re-
fusing to withdraw from the occu-
pied territories" (Free Press, April
7). What ex-President Carter calls
"occupied territories" includes the
eastern part of Jerusalem, the Old
City. He is wrong in calling it
occupied territory. In 1948
Jerusalem was a Jewish city.
That is when Jordan attacked and
seized the Old City. Almost 2,000
Jews died trying to defend their
city. All Jews that survived were
forced out and Arab squatters
moved in . . .In 1967, Jordan at-
tacked Israel, joining Egypt and
Syria in another attempt to de-
stroy the Jewish state. Israel
fought back and defeated the in-
vaders. Jordan's armies were dri-
ven back across the Jordan River,
to the East Bank, their legal in-
