THEY DANCED UP a storm
. . . shrieked with excitement .. .
thrilled themselves . . . and cried
with joy.
It was a wonderful night . . . win
or lose . . . as Joe Cornell came in
from California to put on his an-
nual spring and dance competi-
tion at Michigan Inn.
The weatner was terrible out-
side . . . rainy and foggy . . . but
still about 500 people . . . stu-
dents, friends, parents and rela-
tives . . . came to witness what in
each of 23 years has been a
thorough fun night.
Dance fever prevailed as both
young and older started the eve-
ning swishing feet to the rhythms
of Jerry Fenby Orchestra . . . and
the Joe Cornell "Party Perker
Uppers."
Last year's crowd of 650 might
have been a bit too much . . . this
seemed just right . . . as Joe, who
like TV's Dick Clark, never seems
to grow old, wife Kathie and su-
perb staff, put on another very
fine ball and dance competition.
Such a great sight . . . Here was
Joe onstage emceeing as he's done
for umpteen years . . . and Leo
Knight taking pictures galore .. .
just like the days back in 1953
when they were across the street
from each other on Wyoming and
Curtis . . .• and on through the
years at so many many affairs .. .
This was Joe's first dance studio
. . . and Leo's first photography
studio.
So much excitement as Joe kept
asking from the stage, "What
number do you like?" . . . while
youngsters with numerals on
back, did best for the judges walk-
ing around . . . Proud moms, dads,
grandparents and friends taking
pictures . . . Morris Margulies
snapping son, Adam . . . (Morris,
owner of award-winning La Mir-
age, Sunset Strip and Market
Place, took lessons from Joe when
a student at Mumford High) .. .
Don Lakind getting shots of
daughter Stacey . . . Mark Man-
hoff with permanent "shooting"
son Brad . . . George Jerris liter-
ally leaping from his wheelchair
to watch granddaughter Shayna
Jerris . . . as her other grand-
parent, Al Perlmutter, told of giv-
ing Leo Knight his first photo-
taking job in '53 . . . Sol and Ethel
Lakind pointing to "That's our
granddaughter" Stacey Lakind,
daughter of Suzi Lakind and Don
Lakind.
All the youngsters marched in
to marching music ofHail To The
V ictorsand excitement reigriedl
supreme.
The couples danced their hearts
out . . . as judges Ken Harris, Bob
Spector, Steve Wolf, Marcy Shul-
man, Larry Miller, Henrietta
Weinberg, Laurie Levine, Tami
Lifton, Jeff Milgrom, Sharon
Eaton, Debra Moran-Rohr and
Julie Schneider-Levinson walked
around making selections .. .
Their criteria were . . . timing,
footwork, posture, deportment,
carriage, animation and overall
look as a team . . . You should
have heard the shrieking when
each couple's names were called
as finalists! . . . The youngsters
. . . so very cute . . . and well
trained . . . had rested after their

fox trot, cha-cha and rock-and-roll
routines.
Joe Cornell's mobile music
"Party Perker Uppers" . . . Ken
Harris, Bill Goldstein, Steve
Wolf, Rick Lederman, Eric Gould,
Bob Goldstein, Ron Lederman,
David Stein and Mike Garfinkel
. . . then spun discs for general
dancing . . . Next came free-style
dance contest . . . and finals.
After more general dancing .. .
big drum roll signified that the
big moment had arrived . . . A
hush came over the huge throng
. . . and then, a surge of excite-
ment as each name was called to
receive trophies.
Jason Rosen, son of Bill and Sue
Rosen, was being bar mitzvah'd
the next day . . . but it wasn't in
the cards for him to receive a gift
before . . . However, it was for
Stacey Lakind, being bat
mitzvah'd the next day at Temple
Israel . . . Stacey and her partner,
Dale Turken, received trophies
for first place.
Two years ago, Stacey's
brother, Andy, had also taken
first place.
Second place went to Jessica
Rodnick and Marc Nakisher .. .
Third place was Dana Savas and
Corbin Bell . . . Fourth, Tracy
Horton and Brian Apple . . . Fifth,
Lori Barton and Craig Weingar-
ten . . . Sixth, Lori Rosenblatt and
J.J. Modell.
In the freestyle competition for
all students . . . Brad Manhoff was
a "show stopper" winner doing his
excellent solo . . . break dancing
with unusual poise and rhythmic
precision.
As usual was afterglow in room
off to side of 'ballroom . . . where
Joe and Kathy greeted folks .. .
Among them was Henrietta
Weinberg, David Hermelin's sis-
ter and very fine actress about
town . . . who was Joe's dance
partner on Omena Inn in 1953 .. .
Also Mimi Hozman and Sheila
Axler of Gateway Travel on 12
Mile and Northwestern, who are
responsible for Joe and Kathy
coming to and from California .. .
when not spending time at their
condo here.
Uncle Joe has a very enviable
history . . . Not only has he made
so many people happy with his
wonderful master of ceremonies
and dancing abilities . . . but he is
solely responsible for helping to
show thousands of youngsters the
right ways in life . . . on growing
up . . . This is Joe Cornell's very
precious reward.
BACK IN 1964, Dick Sharp
and Gene Altschuler headed their
own advertising agency . . . and
on the side played musical in-
struments together for shows at
the Fisher Theater . . . Dick the
piano and Gene on violin.
Today, Dick is head of a medical
laboratory . . . and plays eve-
nings, Wednesday through
Saturday, at Chef Theodore's
piano bar on Orchard Lake Rd.
between 12 and 13 Mile . . . Gene
went to Baltimore, Md.and has
been concertmaster of its sym-
phony . . . Dick graduated Jul-
liard School of Music . . . Gene
from the Eastman School of Music
in Rochester, N.Y. . . . receiving a
