The Family Of
HERMAN
GRAY
Victor Herman, the native De-
troiter who suffered in Siberian
prison camps before being allowed
to return to the U.S., died March
25 at age 69.
Mr. Herman wrote a book, Corn-
ing Out of the Ice, which described
how he, his wife, and infant
daughter survived the Siberian
wilderness.
Mr. Herman had brought suit
against Ford Motor Co., demand-
ing $10 million in compensation
for his suffering in Siberia. He al-
leged that his father had taken he
and his family back to Russia as
part of a Ford Motor Co. plan to
build an auto plant there. The au-
tomaker denied that such a plan
existed. The suits are still pend-
ing.
He never denied his U.S. citi-
zenship. While in Russia, he was
an aviator and cited for his
parachute jumping feats.
He was arrested by the Soviets
and sent to Siberia in a secret
police purge. He believed the ar-
rest came about because he re-
fused to give up his U.S. citizen-
ship.
He is survived by his wife,
Galina; two daughters, Svetlana
and Janna; and two sisters, Re-
becca Kemsley and Mirium.

Mr. Fischer was a member of
Adat Shalom Synagogue and the
Downtown Synagogue. He was
graduated from Wayne State
University Law School in 1938.
He was a member of the Detroit,
Michigan and American bar asso-
ciations. •He was in private prac-
