Grose's 'Changing Israel'
Impressive Appraisal

A Changing Israel by Peter
Grose (Vintage Books) is so chal-
lenging in its analysis of current
trends that the eminent author's
account of current Israeli experi-
ences serves as a most impressive
supplement to his earlier and
widely acclaimed Israel in the
Mind of America. The earlier
work traced the historic links be-
tween the two friendly nations.
The new one, even in its brevity of
130 pages, covers a vast field of
attention to the Jewish state.
Grose is managing editor of
Foreign Affairs magazine and is a
Senior Fellow of the Council of
Foreign Relations. He repre-
sented the New York Times as
correspondent in Israel and Rus-
sia.
The restiveness of the Israel of
this era, its divisiveness into the
Ashkenazi and Sephardi factions,
the religious factors of the volatile
people, are analyzed in a manner
emphasizing the concern of the
emerging problems.
Similarly, the Arab problem is
surveyed. While there is retention
of assurance that Israel retains a
strong national existence, the
problems are presented as the
challenging aspects of this era,
with special concern for the
events that transpired since the
Lebanese conflict.
Noteworthy in Grose's com-

Peter Grose

ments is this assertion about the
internal religious confrontations:
"The wealth, devotion and mili-
tancy of the ultra-Ofthodox re-
main. Far more than the
Sephardi-Ashkenazi split, the
conflict between the varying de-
mands of religious observance is
the most potentially disruptive
threat to the unity of Jewish Is-
rael."
In its totality, A Changing Is-
rael serves as a guide for students
of current conditions and as an
emphatic addendum to the
author's impressively researched
historical records of Zionism and
the Jewish state.
