Greens To Join
Bonn Memorial

I 1 DAY SERVICE

Bonn (JTA) — The Green Party
faction in the Bonn City Council,
in a surprise reversal, has agreed
to join a local association formed
to resist anti-Semitism and anti-
Zionism and to erect a memorial
here- to Bonn Jews who perished
in the Holocaust.
But the national organization
of the Green Party, an opposition
party in the Bundestag, is stand-
ing by its original refusal to
endorse the memorial. The rea-
son, according to observers, is that
the Greens won't align them-
selves with a group fighting
anti-Zionism in the Federal Re-
public. Several influential party
leaders have gone on record as
being anti-Zionist although they
insist they are not anti-Semitic.
The Bonn chapter of the Green
Party took the same position.
The local association, com-
prised mainly of Jews, has been in
the forefront of the campaign to
erect a memorial on the site of the
former Bonn synagogue. There
has been resistance on the part of
local authorities who would prefer
to use the site as a parking lot.

Sharon Regrets
Saving Arafat

Paris (JTA) — Ariel Sharon, Is-
rael's former Defense Minister,
told a French newsmagazine that
Israel's "only mistake during its
war in Lebanon had been to let
Yasir Arafat come out alive."
Sharon, who now serves as
Trade and Industry Minister, told
the French weekly U.S.O., "Let-
ting Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization Chief Arafat leave Tripoli
alive was a mistake that never
should have happened."
Turning to Israeli-Egyptian re-
lations and President Hosni
Mubarak's recent peace initia-
tive, Sharon said "there can be no
serious negotiations as long as
terrorism continues to exist."
He added, "Any attempt to con-
sider the PLO as a moderate
movement is illogical and can not
be considered."

The

Washington Post Tuesday pub-

lished an opinion page article
written by a professor of mass
communications at Southern Il-
linois University that assailed the
media for its negative portrait of
the Arab people and their culture.
"When depicting Arabs, TV and
screen writers, novelists, car-
toonists and other media profes-
sionals incorporate negative
`myths' of the Arabs," wrote Prof.
Jack Shaheen.
After citing numerous in-
stances to support his contention,
Prof. Shaheen said Arab
stereotypes should be abandoned
along with others: "the black
domestic, the greedy Jew, the
savage Indian, the dirty Hispanic
and the Italian mobster."
