Shopping Mall
Comes To Israel

- BY ELANA EIZAK KUPERSTEIN

Special to The Jewish News

A Canadian-based investment
firm is building Israel's first in-
door shopping mall. Scheduled to
open its doors to consumers next
summer, the American-style sub-
urban mall will offer air-
conditioned space for 70 mer-
chants and parking for 1,350 cars.
The Canion, will feature four
movie theaters, a supermarket,
department stores, boutiques, and
restaurants.
The convenient Ramat Gan lo-
cation is expected to attract shop-
pers from Tel Aviv and all its sub-
urbs. It remains to be seen
whether the Dizengoff Cafe cul-
ture will relocate its social head-
, quarters into the cool and modern
mall interiors.

Despite objections from reli-
gious party leaders, the Cabinet
5 approved the advancing of clocks
for five months starting in April.
A trial "Summer Time" im-
plemented last year saved an es-
' timated $2 million in energy
costs. Religious leaders objected
because of potential violations of
the Sabbath as a result of the time
change.

There is a new face on Israel's
troubled currency. A. pensive
Golda Meir graces the 10,000
Shekel Note issued last De-
cember. On the other side of the
, note we see Meir's appearance at
the Moscow synagogiie in 1948
with the words "Let My People
Go." With the current inflation
rate Israel is forced to issue larger
currency bills frequently, as the
smaller notes diminish in value
and become impractical.

42,000 Settlers
In West Bank

Jerusalem (ZINS) — Some
a 42,000 Jews now call the West
Bank home, according to a study
by the West Bank Data Project, an
independent research group
headed by former Jerusalem De-
puty Mayor Meron Benvenisti.
The study revealed 9,000
Jewish families living in the 114
current West Bank settlements.
Previous estimates placed the
number of Jews in the adminis-
tered territories at 28,000-30,000.

The Dan Hotel chain was fined
IS 75,000 ($125) for practicing sex
discrimination in a classified ad-
vertisement for a cook. Such an
offense is easy to prove in job ads
written in Hebrew because of the
different gender endings.

The Med-Dead Canal project is
one victim of the current wage
and price freeze. The costly plan to
connect the Mediterranean and
the Dead Sea is about to be put on
hold indefinitely.

The hotel allowance for out-of-
town Knesset members was re-
cently dropped to $35 a night,
limiting their choice of accommo-

dations to three-star hotels, and
forcing many to leave their old
favorite, the five-star Hilton.

Would you rather have a cash refund or due bills for the
gifts you can't use?
