Tel Aviv (JTA) — Dr. Josef
Mengele, the Auschwitz death
camp doctor responsible for in-
human medical experiments on
1,500 pairs of twins and the man
who played a role in the deaths of
some 300,000 Auschwitz inmates,
will be tried in absentia in
Jerusalem next week, during an
international conference of the
twins who survived the Nazi doc-
tor's experiments.
Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesent-
hal, who has come to Israel for the
public trial, said Monday that the
eye-witness evidence it will pro-
duce of Mengele's crimes is more
important than the fate of the
criminal.
Mengele's "life is absolutely
without any importance, and be-
lieve me that thorughout the 25
years I have been occupied in the
search for him, we have had many
propositions, from people who
could do it, to kill him," Wiesent-
hal said, adding that he has al-
ways refused such offers.
"A trial against Mengele would
be the big historic lesson," the
Nazi-hunter said. "It will be this
lesson the young people need. And
this will be a battle won against
all the denyers, whether simple
people or university professors,"
Wiesenthal said, referring to the
current crop of Holocaust re-
visionists.
"What he (Mengele) has done
cannot be punished. How can you
punish a man who was responsi-
ble for the deaths of 300,00Q

people, for such cruel experi-
ments."
Wiesenthal said he was "99 per-
cent certain" that Mengele is still
living in Paraguay under the pro-
tection of powerful friends within
the military dictatorship of that
country.
Meanwhile, a public meeting
marking the 40th anniversary of
the Allied liberation of Auschwitz
was held in Jerusalem Sunday.
Some 1,200 Auschwitz survivors
and their children attended. A
similar gathering was held at
Oswiecim (Auschwitz) in Poland,
site of the death camp, to mark the
anniversary.
- In Washington last' week,
Assistant. Secretary of State for
Human Rights and Humanita-
rian Affairs Eiliot Abrams said
that the Reagan Administration
would back the Justice Depart-
ment's investigation into reports
that Mengele was arrested by
American authorities in the U.S.
occupied zone of Vienna in 1947
and then released.
This was indicated in army in-
telligence documents obtained
under the Freedom of Information
Act by the Simon Weisenthal
Center in Los Angeles. The docu-
ments reportedly mention that
Mengele may have sought entry
to Canada from Argentina under
an alias in 1962 and that U.S. in-
telligence was informed of his visa
application.
Also, a suit was filed Tuesday

Rabbi Kushner's address at Temple Beth El is made
possible through he Loren B. Fischer Memorial Youth
Fund. This Fund has been established by Loren's family
and friends in order to bring youth-oriented and innova-
tive programs to Temple Beth El for the benefit of the
entire student and adult members of the Temple and the
general Jewish and non-Jewish community as well.

The types of programs that will be presented now and in
the future will be appropriate to the issues of the time and
will address areas of human rights, justice, current events,
