States government relase four
additional pages of classified
Army documents that may pro-
vide key information in the
Mengele case. The law suit was
filed jointly by Sen. Alfonse
D'Amato (R-NY) and Rabbi Mar-
vin Flier, dean of the Wiesenthal
Center.
The United States reportedly
supplied the Canadians with in-
formation about Mengele but sub-
sequent follow-up, if any, has not
been revealed. U.S. intelligence
has established that Menke was
an alias used by Mengele.
Canadian Prime Minister
Brian Mulroney has also ordered
an investigation into the matter.
Mulroney told parliament last
week that he has directed Justice
Minister John Crosbie and Sol-
icitor General Elmer MacKay to
sift intelligence records for evi-
dence that Mengele sought a visa
at the Canadian consulate in
Buenos Aires under the Menke
alias. There is no knowledge that
he ever entered Canada.

Conference Asks
Gandhi To Change
Israel Policies

New York — The chairman of
the Conference of Presidents of
Major American Jewish Organ-
izations has called on Prime
Minister Rajiv Gandhi of India to
change his country's "policy and
attitude" toward Israel.
Kenneth J. Bialkin, chairman
of the Conference, said in a letter
to the recently-elected Indian
leader:
"Indian hostility toward Israel
and her people has caused the
American Jewish community
great consternation in recent
years. On numerous occasions the
Indian government has discrimi-
nated against Israeli citizens —
athletes, scientists, jurists and
others — by denying them per-
mission to enter your country" to
participate in various interna-
tional events.
"This discrimination," Mr.
Bialkin said, "together with In-
dia's unceasing condemnations of
Israel at the United Nations and
within the unaligned movement
and its one-sided identification
with the Arab and PLO cause,
have undermined . . . India's abil-
ity to assume an honest and con-
structive role in Middle East
peacemaking." •
The Jewish le.ader continued:
"India's hostility toward a vibrant
sister democracy and a staunch
American ally has affected the
attitudes of many in this country
who would like to identify more
with Indian causes and concerns.
"Perhaps, under your leader-
ship, the Indian government
might assume a fairer, more
even-handed approach to the
Middle East conflict — an ap-
proach that will allow India, with
such prestige and prominence
among the nations of the world, to
play an active and effective part
in encouraging the Arab world to
negotiate directly with Israel and
seek a peaceful solution for this
troubled region."
