Karen Sklar works out at the Jewish Center.
age teenager," said that in
high school her sports activi-
ties often interfered with
plans with friends. Fre-
quently, she had to cancel
plans with people who "didn't
understand."
"Now my friends realize
how important it (sports) was
to me in high school."
High school was not her only
training ground for basket-
ball. For many years she
attended basketball camp at
the Center. She even attended
former Detroit Piston star
Greg Kelser's basketball
camp. She found the experi-
ence helpful.
"At the end of each session -
there were contests. At the end
I won the one-on-one contests.
It helped me build my confi-
dence. We played with people
better than us."
Asked if she had any sports
idols, she listed Kelser and
Jack Sikma of the Seattle
Supersonics. She said some of
the basketball campers told
her she shoots baskets like
Sikma.
Karen said men were ap-
prehensive about letting a
"girl" play basketball with
them, but now that they've
seen her play they respect her.
She admits that she's not al-
ways among the first to be in-
cluded in a game.
Despite the likes of Nancy
Lieberman and other women
who are making strides in
basketball and other "non-
traditional" women's sports,
Karen still pegs basketball as
a man's sport. She said she
hoped that people wouldn't at-
tach a stereotype about female
athletes being masculine or
lesbian to her.
"I'm very feminine. I don't
want people to think I'm queer
playing man's sport."
Far from being loud and ag-
gressive, could one have any
doubts about a female basket-
ball player who wears her
pearl earrings on the court?
