BETTER:

Partment responds with .a
poster of a cracked, dry desert
and a few red and yellow blos-
soms. The caption reads: We
never.promised you a rose
garden."
"We're a consumer society
but we're still pioneers," says
Aron. "There are no more
changes with the times. Now
we need pioneers in high
technology, in the settle-
ments, in Project Renewal and
other areas. We are emphasiz-
ing the challenge of adapting
to a changing, growing
society."
An emigrant himself as a
teenager from Chile, Aron,
who served as ambassador to
Columbia for three years be-
fore taking this position, says
he is well aware of the many
practical problems facing new
olim. Housing is a major one,
though he says it has been
exaggerated. Aron personally
visits absorption centers at
least twice a week and talks to
new emigrants about their ex-
periences, positive and nega-
tive, in adjusting to life in Is-
rael.
What I come away with is
the strong impression that if
an oieh (emigrant) is willing to
solve his problems, he'll make

not wait for Israelis to take
you in. But once yob. show that
you want to be an Israeli and
to have Israeli friends, they
will help you," says Aron.
He says too many olim tend
to stay among their own, with
Americans . living among
former Americans, South Af-
ricans living among former
South Africans, and so on. "It's
a natural tendency to seek out
their own, but it also shows the
process of becoming a true Is-
raeli," he believes.
Aron acknowledges that his
visits to absorption centers are
not enough, and points out
that he has initiated follow-up
surveys on the effectiveness of
the centers and of shlichim
(emissaries from Israel who
work in the Diaspora to pro-
. mite ali,Tah).
A committee on absorption
centers is studying everything
from providing telephones for
individual apartments (at pre-
sent there may be one or two
public phones for hundreds of
families), to changing the
entire operating structure. As
Aron notes, "the Point of an
absorption center is to ease the
process of transition, but
sometimes we find that they
are having the opposite effect
and are isolating the new
olim."
As for shlichim, Aron hopes
