The Jewish Association for Re-
tarded Citizens has opened its
eighth Haverim Home, on Tele-
graph Road in Franklin. Six men-
tally retarded men are now living
in the large estate on 5 1/2 wooded
acres.
The facility was donated by
Nathan Greenberg, A. S. Green,
Dr. Milton Shiffman, Dr. Ben
Stein, Esther Stein, Val Valinsky
and the estate of Louis Greenberg.
It brings to 48 the number of re-
tarded residents in the eight
JARC facilities. The formal dedi-
cation of the new home, to be
called the Samuel and Rebecca
Greenberg/Joseph Shiffman
Haverim Home, will be held next
spring.
At the same time, JARC
President Ron Stone announced
that the organization will sponsor
a major fund-raising event Nov. 1.
Entertainer Ben Vereen will per-
form for the organization at Ford
Auditorium. Proceeds will be used
to fund the JARC homes and ac-
tivities.
The six new Greenberg/
Shiffman Haverim Home resi-
dents are now enjoying those pro-
grams.
Participation in the JARC
Baseball League, attending con-
certs at Shepherd Park in Oak
Park, and the Thursday Night So-
cial Group at the Jewish Commu-
nity Center are a few of the ex-
periences. The first Shabbat
dinner at the new home was one of
the only times that several of the
men participated in this Jewish
tradition. During the week, each
of the men will either be in a
school program or will attend the
Jewish Vocational Service Day
Activity Program.
Three of the six residents of the
home had lived for many years in
state institutions. Another resi-
dent lived with his widowed
mother until she died last year,
and as there was no alternative,
he was unavoidably placed in a
state institution. The fifth resi-
dent has lived in an inner city
home for years with little or no
contact with his family, and the
sixth had lived at home until his
mother's illness prompted the
family to place him.
There are 150 individuals
awaiting placement in the JARC
Haverim Homes. Most of the resi-
dents of the Telegraph Road home
have been on the waiting list for
10 or more years.
Stone also announced that
Michael Feldman has been named
chairman of "An Evening With
Ben Vereen." Feldman has sol-
icited JARC board members and
other volunteers to 'plan" the
event.
Vereen's one-man cabaret act is
only one of his many entertain-
ment accomplishments, which in-
clude his Tony Award-winning
role in the long-running musical
hit Pippin, his widely-acclaimed
role as Chicken George in the
Emmy Award-winningRoots, and
his performance in Bob Fosse'sAll
That Jazz.
Vereen's Nov. 1 performance in
Detroit will mark the third major
fund-raising event for JARC. The
