organization sponsored film bene-
fits in September 1981 (Best Boy)
and last November (Charley).
Since its incorporation in 1969,
JARC has been dedicated to pro-
viding quality residential serv-
ices to mentally retarded men and
women. It opened its first
Haverim (Friendship) Home for
six residents in 1972. Each of the
residents is either employed or
attends a sheltered workshop or
school, participates in social and
recreational activities, and con-
tributes to the smooth running of
the home. With the help of trained
staff, each is learning the skills
needed to grow to their fullest
potential. The JARC homes are
located in Franklin, Oak Park,
Southfield, Beverly Hills, Pleas-
ant Ridge and Huntington Woods.
The 150 individuals on the
JARC waiting list are aided
through the JARC Family Assis-
tance Program, which helps with
the many difficulties which arise
during the waiting for placement.
JARC staff work closely with
these families to help alleviate
problems in the home and to pro-
vide relief in emergency or crisis
situations.
JARC also helps mentally re-
tarded individuals live indepen-
dently in their own apartments
through the Aaron and Helen L.
DeRoy Independent Apartment
Program. Staff in this unique pro-
gram work with clients while they
are still living at home, to teach
them the skills to live indepen-
dently. After helping them locate
an apartment, the staff continue
to assist each person to ensure
their success. '

Father, son share
bar mitzvah with
Soviet Jews

Cleveland (JTA) — The bar
mitzvah of a son and his father
marked a "first" for Cong. Beth-
Aynu,. a Conservative congrega-
tion in Beechwood, Ohio, accord-
ing to the Cleveland Jewish News.
But the double rite for Rory Ru-
bin, and his father, Richard Ru-
bin, had another unusual mean-
ing for the Shaker Heights family.
They were also "twinned" in a
7; proxy bar mitzvah with Karmi
and Lev Elbert of Kiev, who were
-, unable to exercise their religion
in the Soviet Union.
