San Francisco Mayor Di-
anne Feinstein, whose city
will host the Democratic na-
tional convention next
month and who has been
mentioned as a candidate
for the vice president's spot
on the party's 1984 ticket,
has, in the space of six
years, become a major ta-
lent on the American politi-
cal scene.
Mrs. Feinstein rose to na-
tional prominence in No-
vember 1978 when she be-
came acting mayor of San
Francisco following the as-
sassination of Mayor
George Moscone and City Dianne Feinstein
Supervisor Harvey Milk.

Mrs. Feinstein works 14
to 16 hours a day. She lives
and breathes her job. She is
cool in the face of difficulty,
fair but tough in negotia-
tions, and politically adroit
in making appointments.
Mrs. Feinstein has one
daughter, Katherine Anne,
from her first marriage to
Jack- Berman, a lawyer.
Tilt marriage ended in di-
vorce. She married
neurosurgeon Bertram
Feinstein in 1962. Feinstein
died in 1978. She is now
married to Richard Blum,
an investment banker, who
takes an active role in her
political activities.

The story of Dianne
Feinstein's career has
enough drama and success
to fill volumes without
touching upon her sex and
religion. Her ability to rise
above failure, tragedy, and
disappointments and ulti-
mately succeed in govern-
ing a city of such diverse
elements is heroic. The
staunchness she has shown
in governing a city which
has been an assortment of
unusual special interest
groups exemplifies the
commitment of a woman
who chose to be Jewish
without fear that her reli-
gion would 'hamper her
political career.

relatives have asked him
not to do so. Exceptional cir-
cumstances include the pos-
sibility of homicide or a
threat to public health.
Even when the medical
examiner determines there
is such "a compelling public
necessity," he will afford the
objecting party at least 48
hours to start a court action
to determine the need for an
autopsy.
Shmuel Prager, Agudath
Israel counsel, said the
order also provides that a
police officer responding to
the scene of a death should
not volunteer information,
but if he is asked, the officer
should advise the "in-
terested parties" that they
have the right to communi-
cate with the medical exam-
iner and tell the examiner
about their objections to an
autopsy contrary to their
religious beliefs.
