Cults reach
NY elderly

New York (JTA) - A
leading educator reported
• that missionaries and cult
leaders are reaching out not
only to "vulnerable" Jewish
youth on area colleges cam-
puses, but are seeking also
to influence Jewish senior
citizens in nursing homes
and hospitals.
The disclosure was made
by Dr. Seymour Lachman,
chairman of the task force
on missionaries and cults of
the Jewish Community Re-
lations Council and director
of community development
at City University of New
York. He spoke at, the
spring luncheon of the
Women's League of the Na-
tional Council of Young Is-
rael.
Dr. Lachman also re-
ported that some of the cults
are spending substantial
sums to establish headquar-
ters in New York City and
even in Israel to expand
their programs.
He said the missionaries
had adopted a "more subtle"
approach to "dupe" both
younger and older Jews.
They no longer ask the Jews
to renounce Judaism, he
said, but rather that the
Jews "fulfill" themselves by
accepting some key tenets of
Christianity or of their
other cult beliefs, in addi-
tion to their practice of
Jewish customs.
He said this was merely a
"ploy" to attract prospective
victims, by subjecting
themselves to mind-control
techniques intended to rob
them of their Jewish
spiritual identity.

New JTS
dean chosen

Dr. Tucker, who has been
on the JTS faculty since
1976, will succeed former
Detroiter Dr. Joel Roth in
the dean's post.
Dr. Roth has been an ad-
vocate for the ordination of
women and was instrumen-
tal in the seminary's 1983
decision to admit qualified
women to the Rabbinical
School.
