Yiddish song
flavors book
Miriam Dvorin is a native
of San Francisco who gained
enchantment in Yiddish
from her grandparents. On
her visits to them she was
inspired by their tales of ex-
periences in Russia. The
songs she heard and the
theatricals she attended
where she heard stage songs
inspired her eventual devo-
tion to Yiddish folksongs.
The result is her record of
Yiddish songs which she in-
terestingly an
enthusiastically entitled
Grandma Soup. It has just
been issued by Arhoolie Re-
cords, 10341 San Pablo
Ave., .E1 Cerrito, Calif.
94530.
The way Miss Dvorin ar-
rived at the title of her re-
cord is thus detailed by her:
"This record is a taste of
Grandma Soup — that mys-
terious blend of culinary
and cultural delight we are
still trying to appreciate
fully."
Miss Dvorin has gained
national attention as a
singer and violist. Her new
record includes some tradi-
tional and many popular
Yiddish titles. Among them
are: Oyfn Pripetshik, Bobe
un Zehde, Dire Gelt, Shpil
Klezmerl and A Brivele der
Mamen.
