THE DETROIT ' JEWISH NEWS M USIC Yiddish song flavors book Miriam Dvorin is a native of San Francisco who gained enchantment in Yiddish from her grandparents. On her visits to them she was inspired by their tales of ex- periences in Russia. The songs she heard and the theatricals she attended where she heard stage songs inspired her eventual devo- tion to Yiddish folksongs. The result is her record of Yiddish songs which she in- terestingly an enthusiastically entitled Grandma Soup. It has just been issued by Arhoolie Re- cords, 10341 San Pablo Ave., .E1 Cerrito, Calif. 94530. The way Miss Dvorin ar- rived at the title of her re- cord is thus detailed by her: "This record is a taste of Grandma Soup — that mys- terious blend of culinary and cultural delight we are still trying to appreciate fully." Miss Dvorin has gained national attention as a singer and violist. Her new record includes some tradi- tional and many popular Yiddish titles.
