of nine percent interest. For
some students, particularly

The Jewish Educational
Loan Service can make the
difference.
For more than 37 years,
JELS has furnished
interest-free loans to stu-
dents in need of financial
assistance. Renamed last
year, the Jewish Educa-

and Hebrew Free Loan
Association.
John L. Greenberg serves
as over-all chairman of
JELS. Subcommittee
chairmen are Bruce E. Thal,
policy; Stuart Goldstein,
loan review; and Henry
Leopold, collection review.
Last year, JELS assisted
86 individuals with educa-
tional loans totaling
$102,300. Many were work-
ing toward degrees in
medicine, dentistry,

(

podiatry and optometry,
others in law and social
work. Several under-
graduate students also were
given assistance.
Unfortunately, however,
many more applicants could
not be accommodated, and
those who did receive loans
received substantially less
than what they required —
on the average, 50 percent
less.
The Jewi sh Educa-
tional Loan Service now
is seeking the assistance
of professional organiza-
tions to enhance avail-
able loan funds, particu-
larly in their fields. Asso-
ciations of medical doc-
tors, osteopathic physi-
cians, podiatrists, de-
ntists and attorneys are
among those being urged
to increase their partici-
pation.
