Among the groups which participate are the National Council of Jewish Women Greater Detroit Section, Women of Maimonides Medical Society, Ruth Franklin Einstein Educational Fund of Temple Beth El and Hebrew Free Loan Association. John L. Greenberg serves as over-all chairman of JELS. Subcommittee chairmen are Bruce E. Thal, policy; Stuart Goldstein, loan review; and Henry Leopold, collection review. Last year, JELS assisted 86 individuals with educa- tional loans totaling $102,300. Many were work- ing toward degrees in medicine, dentistry, ( podiatry and optometry, others in law and social work. Several under- graduate students also were given assistance. Unfortunately, however, many more applicants could not be accommodated, and those who did receive loans received substantially less than what they required — on the average, 50 percent less. The Jewi sh Educa- tional Loan Service now is seeking the assistance of professional organiza- tions to enhance avail- able loan funds, particu- larly in their fields. Asso- ciations of medical doc- tors, osteopathic physi- cians, podiatrists, de- ntists and attorneys are among those being urged to increase their partici- pation.
