A state senator from East
Detroit is asking the legis-
lature to place a Michigan
Constitutional amendment
on the ballot that would
give parents a tax deduction
of up to $700 for each child
they send to school. The de-
duction would be allowed to
defray tuition, textbook and
transportation costs.
Since these costs are gen-
erally covered for public
school students, the pro-
posal would aid parents of
students in private and
religious schools.
The proposal was made by
State Sen. Gilbert J.
DiNello and would need
two-thirds approval in both
houses of the legislature be-
fore it could be placed on the
ballot.
