Editor, The Jewish News:
I am sorry that a letter to
the editor (The Jewish
News, Oct. 7) has the wrong
information about a quota-
tion I was alleged to have
made this summer.
I never said anything
about "bringing Israel to its
knees." In fact, Prime
Minister Begin cabled his
apologies to me when he
learned that this alleged
quotation was absolutely
false, and he graciously
promised to inform the Is-
raeli and Western news
media about the mistake.

Editor, The Jewish News:
It is past time to call into
question not only the
further relevance of the
Camp David accords of 1979
but also any further finan-
cial support for Egypt, the
main subverter of those ac-
cords.
Egypt has gotten what it
wanted, the return of the
entire Sinai, but has not
carried out its side of Camp
David. It does not trade with
Israel very much, there are
next to no scientific or cul-
tural exchanges, and Egyp-
tian tourism to Israel is
actively discouraged.
In contrast, Israeli and
American Jews have been
going to Egypt, Americans
often encouraged to do so by
Jewish travel agencies.
Moreover, hostile Egyptian
propaganda toward Israel
and toward Jews has never
stopped.

We can do our part by
withholding financial
and other support from
Egypt. At least, we
should not support Egyp-
tian hostility and duplic-
ity by traveling there
(American Jews visiting
Israel often take a side
trip to Egypt).

Perhaps a tourist boycott
will influence Egypt to
moderate, even to change,
its behavior toward Israel,
to stop its hostility, at least
to fulfill its Camp David ob-
ligations. Such a boycott by
supporters of Israel, Jewish
and non-Jewish, is a first
step.

Oz, Vishniac
at Book Fair

Editor, The Jewish News:
For 32 years, your per-
sonal efforts and
enthusiasm for the many
fine books and authors pre-
sented at the Metropolitan
Detroit Jewish Book Fair
every November has helped
make it the very best in the

United States. That is why
the top publishing houses
work so hard to put their
new books on the programs
at the Book Fair.
This year, perhaps more
than ever before, two ex-
tremely timely books need
the special attention of your
readers.
On Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2
p.m., Amos Oz, Israel's
world-renowned author,
will speak on "In the Land of
Israel," just published by
Harcourt Brace
Javanovich. Oz traveled,
noted and now reports on
what the people told him
about their present condi-
tion in Israel.

It is overwhelmingly
passionate (perhaps the
feelings have surpassed
the reasons) but is accu-
rate enough to be read
and studied for its hon-
esty. More, it deserves to
be a text for all Israel'
studies.

Oz is so deluged with re-
quests to speak on his new
book that our opportdnity to
hear him should not be mis-
sed.
On Monday night, Nov.
14, at 8 p.m., Roman Vis-
hniac will talk about his as-
tonishing new book, "A
Vanished World," just pub-
lished by Farrar, Straus and
Giroux, which is a book of
photographs. Vishniac has,
for the first time, published
a comprehensive selection
from 2,000 (of 16,000 origi-
nally) of his celebrated
photographs of the Jews of
Eastern Europe from 1934
to 1939. Most of the pictures
were taken with a hidden
camera.
Elie Wiesel, in his fore-
ward, calls Vishniac a "poet
of memory." This volume
has a valid claim to be the
finest Jewish book of the
year.
