at Shaarey Zedek Bond Event

Tekoah, chancellor of
Ben-Gurion University of
the Negev who served for
many years as Israel's per-
manent representative to
the United Nations, will be
the keynote speaker at
Cong. Shaarey Zeilek's an-
nual tribute dinner on be-
half of Israel Bonds.
The event will be held
6:30 p.m. Thursday at the
synagogue.
The dinner will honor
Ivan S. Bloch, first Midwest
recipient of Israel's Peace
Medal.
General chairman of the
event is William M. David-
son; dinner chairman is Irv-
ing Laker; congregation
president is David B.
Hermelin, Israel Bonds na-
tional campaign chairman.
One of Israel's
foremost statesmen, Am-
bassador Tekoah served
as Israel's chief spokes-
man at the UN from 1967
to June 1975, when he be-
came president of Ben-
Gurion University of the
Negev.
Tekoah has represented
Israel as ambassador to the
Soviet Union and ambas-
sador to Brazil. He has also
served as director general of
Israel's Ministry for
Foreign Affairs and as Is-
rael's deputy permanent
representative and minister
plenipotentiary to the
United Nations.
From 1953 to 1958, he
was director of Armistice
Affairs in Israel's Foreign
Ministry. In that post he
was the ex-officio head of Is-
rael's Delegations to Mixed
Armistice Commissions
with Egypt, Lebanon, Jor-
dan and Syria. He was Is-
rael's representative in
negotiations with the
United Nations concerning
Mount Scopus in 1957-
1958.
In 1956, he dealt with UN
questions arising out of the
Israel administration of the
"CAN WE TALK?"

Gaza area and went on a
special mission to Gaza.
In addition to these
duties, Tekoah spent a good
deal of time at the United
Nations as a member of Is-
rael's delegation. From
1955 through 1957, he
played a key role in various
talks with the UN
Secretary-General: in 1956
he participated in the Spe-
cial Emergency Session of
the General Assembly deal-
ing with Sinai, and from
1953 through 1956, he com-
piled important reports for
presentation at Security
Council sessions.

In 1952, Tekoah was sent
on a special mission to
Greece, and signed the
Commerce and Navigation
Convention between Israel
and Greece. He began his
diplomatic career in 1948,
serving as an adviser to the
Israel Delegation at the
Third Session of the United
Nations General Assembly.
Born in 1925, Ambas-
sador Tekoah was educated
at the University L'Aurore,
Shanghai, China, where he
received the degree of
Licencie en Droit (LL.B.),
and at Harvard University
where he earned an MA de-
gree. During 1947-1948, he
was an instructor in inter-
national relations at Har-
vard.

Kosher Creole Recipes

An interestingly different
cookbook is the "Kosher
Creole Cookbook" by Mildred
L. Covert and Sylvia P. Gerson.
It features French, Spanish,
black and Indian cooking that
is popular in the New Orleans
area and gives those who ob-
serve kashrut the chance to
taste some of the delicacies of
those styles of cooking. The
book is available for $9.95 in-
cluding postage from Pelican
Publishing Co., Box 189,
Gretna, La. 70053. Some sam-
ple recipes follow:
1 large onion, chopped
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tbsps. vegetable oil
2 tbsps. flour
1 15-oz can stewed tomatoes
1 6-oz. can tomato paste
2 tsps. salt
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. basil leaves
1 lb. trout fillets
1 10-oz. pkg frozen sliced okra,
partially thawed, or 1 lb.
fresh okra, sliced
1/2 lb. redfish fillets
3 cups water
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
3 cups hot cooked rice
Saute vegetables slightly in
oil in Dutch oven. Stir in flour,
blend well. Add remaining in-
gredients except fish, okra and
rice. Simmer covered for 30
minutes. Remove bay leaf.
Add fish and okra. Cover and
simmer additional 10 to 15
minutes or until okra is tender.
Serve in soup bowls over hot
cooked rice. serves 6 to 8.

Mock Crawfish
Salad Recipe
3 lbs. red snapper fillets
4 slices lemon
1 small onion, sliced
1 cup celery, chopped fine
1 large carrot, grated
2 qts. water
1 minced onion or 2 tbsps. in-
stant minced onion
3/4 cup chili sauce
1 cup mayonnaise
2 tsps. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
Bring water to boil in large
kettle. Add red snapper, le-
mon, sliced onion, salt and
pepper. Continue to boil for 20
minutes. drain fish, cool and
flake. Toss fish with minced
onion, celery, carrot, chili
sauce and mayonnaise. Adjust
salt and pepper to taste. Chill
overnight. Serves 8 to 10.
