joint auspices of Sinai
Hospital of Detroit and
the Genetic Counseling
Clinic of Henry Ford
Hospital.

The program screens
child-bearing-age adults to
detect the presence of a par-
ticular genetic trait.
Whenever both parents
carry the Tay-Sachs gene
there is a one-in-four chance
that each pregnancy will
produce a child with Tay-
Sachs.
This will happen only
when the offspring inherits
the Tay-Sachs gene from
each of its parents. If either
parent is not a carrier, the
couple cannot produce a
Tay-Sachs child.
An apparently healthy
baby with the defective
gene will begin to show
signs of the disease at ap-
proximately six months of
age, with progressive loss of
physical skills, blindness,
metal retardation and
coma. The progress of the
illness is irreversible, end-
ing in death by the fourth or
fifth year.

If a couple learns that
they are both carriers,
they are referred to the
Genetic Counseling
Clinic of Henry Ford
Hospital, where they will
be told what the alterna-
tives are and can decide
which option to choose.

They may decide to have
no natural children, but to
adopt. Or they may choose
to have each pregnancy
monitored by amniocen-
tesis, a relatively safe and
simple test which can iden-
tify the fetus that will de-
velop Tay-Sachs. A preg-
nancy in which the fetus

with Tay-Sachs is identified
can be terminated.
The only way to prevent
Tay-Sachs is to detect the
couples who are both Tay-
Sachs carriers and can
transmit the disease to their
offspring.
Tay-Sachs singles out
babies born to Jews of East-
ern and Central European
heritage. While one in 30
Jews are carriers, just one
in 300 non-Jews carries the
